DID YOU KNOW THAT BRAZIL IS ONE OF THE ONLY MARKETS DRINKING MORE WINE NOW THAN IT DID IN 2017? In this great article from IWSR, it says: “Wine volumes for H1 2021-2022 were down -5%, and of the top 20 wine markets, only Brazil is drinking more wine now than it did in 2017.” Brazilians are learning more about wine, and the population is changing their habits from drinking table wines “Vinhos de Mesa” to fine wines. With only about 20% of the population drinking wine, and many of these still changing from table to fine wines, there is still a huge potential for further growth in Brazil. ONE MONTH TILL SHIRAZ WINE DAY! 25 July We're counting down with a month to go until Shiraz Wine Day on 25 July. If you work in wine/ hospitality, we're encouraging you to get involved. This is the fourth Shiraz day to be held, with an opportunity to share the stories about our most planted red grape varietal. A chance to showcase some exceptional products and tell the tales behind the wines. Four years ago, in the middle of Covid lockdowns, we pondered how we could add value and help generate some incremental sales for our clients. Syrah day is held in February but there was no day on the calendar for Shiraz given it's mostly a name used Down Under and not in other parts of the world. We'd seen the impact that a well co-ordinated varietal day campaign could have on sales so #shirazwineday was created by the Mastermind Consulting team. The day changes each year to the fourth Thursday in July each year. Why? Because our experience tells us that wine sales are often greater in the latter part of the week and it gives space from other promotional areas of focus (like Halliday awards released, other red wine days etc). So venues and wineries, if they choose to leverage, have real scope to make the most of this opportunity. With Valentine's Day tomorrow, we have dessert wines on the mind. At Wiens Cellars, we have been making both Ruby Port & White Port long enough to keep the name, but nowadays, that's pretty rare. "Port wine’s roots stretch back to the 17th century when merchants began adding brandy to wine to preserve it for the journey from Portugal to England. Today, true port comes exclusively from the Douro Valley, where the unique terroir lends these wines their distinctive qualities." The forest through the trees… REMEMBER, 100,000,000 gallons of imported wine MORE in one year came into the U.S. between 2021-2022 as a result of the 325,000 tons of rejected smoke fruit in 2020. That imbalance hit the vineyards AND the domestic shelf in 2023. Somebody….ANYBODY? ….and this too shall pass. The perfect storm of the post-pandemic wine imbalances has 2-3 years of rebalancing, and then back to ‘normal’(?) Maybe, as normal is a permanent reset of increased imports….and that’s ok depending on whether your’re a supplier trying to reset or on the sales & distribution side with ‘the world your oyster’.
