August is National Minority Donor Awareness Month (NMDAM), a collaborative effort to save and improve the quality of life of diverse communities by creating a positive culture for organ, eye, and tissue donation. Why is NMDAM needed? 60% of national transplant waiting list patients are from multicultural communities. The need for donation and transplant is more pronounced in minority communities where disproportionately higher rates of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease contribute to organ failure, especially kidney failure. You can find resources to share and read more about NMDAM at nmag1.org and DonateLife.net. 💙💚 #DonateLife #NMDAM2024 NMDAM is a collaborative effort of the National Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation Multicultural Action Group (NMAG).

So, next week it is #OrganDonationWeek. A week (although it shouldn’t have just one special week) dedicated to talking about, celebrating and high lighting the importance of organ donation. Some that know me, know that live with #PolycysticKidneyDisease and on my 39th Birthday I received a kidney transplant. This is a hereditary disease which currently has no cure and has meant that both my father and his sister have also had to receive a kidney transplant, so you can see why organ donation is hugely important not just to me, by all my family as well. In a little under 11hrs time, the Race For Recipients starts, this is a free annual virtual event which living donors, recipients, family and friend and even members of the public can sign up to and help spread the word about Organ Donation. Myself and other members of the Guy’s Hosptial Transplant Games Team will be joining other members of the wider Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust Community to log as many kilometres as we we can, over the next week, starting at 0600 tomorrow morning! If you would like to learn more, please click on the link below and you can join any hospital team throughout the UK, but obviously #TeamGSTT is the best - last year as a community we covered around 1500km across the week. Any form of activity that has a measurable distance can be logged, as long as it’s above your normal day to day activity. As I say, it is a free event and there is no fundraising required, just the willingness to support organ donation! https://lnkd.in/efwNpBhe #RaceForRecipients #OrganDonationAwareness NHS Blood and Transplant

World Blood Donor Day is today, June 14th. We, however, ask that you consider donating June 19th, World Sickle Cell Day! “For a small percentage of the population, finding someone else with the same blood type can be as difficult as looking for a needle in a haystack. Patients who require frequent blood transfusions as part of their treatment, like those with sickle cell disease or thalassemia, can need close blood type matches to prevent these patients from developing complications from their transfusion therapy. The best blood type match for patients with rare blood types often comes from donors of the same race or similar ethnicity” (redcrossblood.org). Consider being a lifesaver. SIGN UP- https://lnkd.in/eVm8SfJi (link in bio) “More than 100,000 people in the United States have sickle cell disease. Sickle cell disease affects 1 out of every 365 Black or African American births. People with sickle cell disease may need as many as 100 units of blood each year. Your blood donations could help alleviate the symptoms of someone living with sickle cell disease, or even help save their life” (redcrossblood.org). Focusing on 1. Health, 2. Family, 3.
