🌟 Thrilled to share my experience as a DOE Scholar supporting the Justice40 initiative! 🌟 As a rising junior double majoring in economics and mathematics at the University of Maryland, College Park, this summer has been incredibly rewarding. I have been working on creating a relational database of Justice40 data by integrating multiple datasets into an database, focused on ensuring that 40% of climate investment benefits reach disadvantaged communities. In addition to this, I've reached out to utility companies and public service commissions across the nation to gather data on utility shutoffs and arrearage information. This effort aligns with the EIA-EJE partnership to explore utility shutoff payback clauses. With many states having halted shutoffs during COVID-19, customers are now facing large bills. Our goal is to find data that shows the impact of these moratoria on disadvantaged communities. We’re exploring state energy offices, federal agencies, and university studies to understand this issue better. I’ve also been utilizing Microsoft Office to design and analyze documentation, presentations, and visualizations to support our reports. This internship has provided me with valuable skills in data analysis, statistical reasoning, database management, and technical communication. Weekly progress reports, mentor collaboration, and group meetings have been vital in developing my expertise in these areas. In addition, I've had the pleasure of meeting wonderful professionals and scholars who have offered invaluable advice on graduate school, career paths, and beyond. Their guidance has been instrumental in shaping my academic and professional goals. A huge thank you to my mentors Alvin Bates, PMP, Dr. Anjuli Jain Figueroa, and the fantastic team at EJE for their support and guidance. 🚀 Exciting News Alert! 🚀 Thrilled to share the fantastic collaboration between my former stomping ground, Accenture UK & Ireland, and my new professional home, Dublin City University! 🤝 As I embark on this new chapter with DCU's Micro-Credentials team, it's heartening to witness the strategic leap forward in our longstanding partnership. The recent Memorandum of Understanding signifies a commitment to deepening collaboration through various initiatives, including joint research, STEM Teacher Internships, WomenOnWalls and more. 🌐 Having spent an incredible 5 years at Accenture Ireland, I've had the privilege of honing my skills and learning from the best in the industry. I’m so happy that this program exists and many congrats to the recipients. Providing funding for grad students who have found non-paid internships is a great first step to facing the reality of the lack of tenure-track (TT) positions and simply preferring an industry career. However, I’ll always take it one step further. Humanities/social sciences grad students receive among, if not, the lowest PhD stipends at Carolina. Since I’m not in the academic job market, I’m unfamiliar with the available number of TT social science professorships but my hypothesis is they are also low. My question is, how is the UNC Graduate School preparing humanities/social science grad students to find PAID internships? As a Carolina grad student, I took it upon myself to find my internship and create my own path. How can University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill continue to do more and do better for its grad students to truly grow with North Carolina and the South?

Anytime I talk to potential graduate students (shout out for Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur ,BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus ,Anurag University ) I am amazed by their question ranging from “what time should I send an email to faculty to get a response!” to questions about racism, cost of living. The National Association of Colleges and Employers says that students with internship are more likely to be male, white students who are not first generation, and students who are not recipients of Pell grants. Northern Essex Community College is working to disrupt this pattern, making internships available to all it community college students, including those in liberal arts.
