A wise and insightful conclusion: "Keep this in mind when recruiting and onboarding new employees. If they are hired to raise the bar for a function of the company they won't achieve that if they are copying your current ways of doing things."
"If you teach them your ways, accidents will keep happening" When living in Sweden, I was going to teach a family member how to drive. To be allowed to do this I needed one day of training. The class was all 35+ with 15+ years of driving experience. It was a tough crowd, where noone saw any sense in being there. But with that sentence the atmosphere changed. The buzz changed to: "Yeah, I drive when tired" or other similar sentiments. Sweden has a vision that in the future no road accidents should cause serious injury and death. That is unfortunately not achieveable with how our generation behave in traffic. We needed to teach the next generation to be better. Keep this in mind when recruiting and onboarding new employees. If they are hired to raise the bar for a function of the company they won't achieve that if they are copying your current ways of doing things.

Agreed on both sides of the sentiment. Again, short story as it corresponds to the ideology below.. It took me SEVEN(7) months in my previous position before very minimal integration updates were approved to our proprietary ERP* system for the sake of efficiency. I spoke with my senior manager and cohort within a month of starting, advising at least 5-10% redundancy within my position DAILY, due to programming glitches in our system. Again, in a management position, my team wasn’t privy to the same accesses as I, and no one else reported issues the years of tenure prior to my arrival. After months of growth within the position, and now beginning to quite candidly, resentfully advise of the continued, expanding issue while my scope of work grew - then and only then was system access granted to multiple individuals on the team so as to corroborate the issues I was discussing since essentially Day 1. Once the issues were seen by all, finally it was an urgent meeting scheduled the very next morning with our tech team to get this resolved. All that said, as ridiculous as it sounds, the ONLY excuse I ever received as to why nothing was being done earlier regarding my issue-reports..was “because I was green to the team…”…and, “I just figured you were doing it wrong…”…”you’ll learn that we’ve always done it this way, don’t even think about trying to change things..” - quotes from my Senior Manager; stated weekly at minimum, most of the dialogue received from him were a blend of those phrases. All that said..Grow and remain objective or get left behind! As someone who legitimately enjoys finding new, more efficient or even fun ways to do something, there’s nothing more offputting or stifling than someone telling me, “we’ve always done it that way, that’s what it is.”
