What would change if we talked about philanthropy as an INVESTMENT rather than a GIFT? When we invest we review the stock prices, research the company projections, evaluate the leadership and their vision, and critically consider the growth and impact potential. However, when we give a "gift" we're taught to expect nothing in return. I've served with a number of nonprofits and can tell you from the inside, that a good nonprofit, with savvy leadership, wants to be an investment. They want you to kick the tires, ask thoughtful questions, remain engaged and request an account of their impact. The leadership will be eager to tell you how they are investing in equipping their team and giving them the resources and vision they need to accomplish the mission. Let's change how we think and communicate about philanthropy and expect more from our investments.
