The Door - A Center of Alternatives’ Post

We hold regular Living in the UK sessions for those who may have newly arrived in the UK or in the City. The sessions are planned and co-produced with our service users and are regularly reviewed so that they meet the needs of the community we are serving. Volunteers with lived experience help staff deliver sessions so that we can draw upon first-hand knowledge. We start with a whistle stop tour of understanding British customs, values and social norms; such as queuing (you know how much we love a queue!) and how a ‘cuppa’ can put people at ease and solve multiple problems😊 . There is much laughter in the first part as we compare British quirkiness to other cultures around the world. We quickly move onto other aspects of Living in the UK such as how to navigate the NHS, gaining a better understanding of the education process and how to access metal health and wellbeing support and advice. Raising an awareness and how to access the many different agencies and organisations that support inclusion health is key in this session. In our experience we have found that this knowledge of the culture empowers people to participate more actively in community life, fostering a sense of belonging.

Additionally, youth community engagement contributes to social cohesion by bridging generational gaps and fostering a sense of unity. It builds a foundation for future leaders who understand the needs and aspirations of their communities. Overall, youth community engagement is instrumental in creating resilient, inclusive, and dynamic societies. Mental health awareness is crucial in today's society for several reasons. Firstly, it helps reduce stigma, fostering an environment where individuals feel comfortable seeking help without fear of judgment. This, in turn, promotes early intervention and treatment for mental health issues. Secondly, increased awareness contributes to better understanding and empathy, creating a supportive community for those facing mental health challenges. It encourages open conversations, breaking down barriers that may prevent people from sharing their struggles. Moreover, mental health awareness is essential for prevention efforts, education, and destigmatizing discussions around mental well-being. As society becomes more aware, resources and support systems can be better aligned to address the mental health needs of individuals, ultimately improving overall public health. Prehabilitation ; my #OneWord2024 What is yours? Prehabilitation, in the context of social value and social justice, can be viewed as a proactive and preventative approach focused on strengthening the resilience and well-being of individuals, families and communities BEFORE they encounter social or economic challenges. This concept involves implementing policies and practices that address social inequalities, promotes access to education and healthcare, and fosters inclusive and innovative community development. The aim is to build a strong social foundation that also enables individuals and communities to better withstand and recover from societal challenges, thereby contributing to a more equitable and just society. Prehabilitation is a proactive operating base with kindness as its core principle alongside a heightened sense of aspiration for others. It is social impact on steroids. Viewing the world through a prehabilitative lens is a demonstration of inclusion without caveat. That is why it is my word for 2024. We're doing some research called #LivingOnTheEdge https://ow.ly/R9MQ50RscsS We want to learn about the support available and how it breaks down across communities to benefit individuals and families. We're interested in the impact of intersectionality on people's experiences. We often work with disabled, autistic and older people. We're particularly keen to hear from organisations whose work includes these groups, even if they aren't your main focus. We're also keen to hear from people who choose not to engage with services or feel they can't. The people you support could be going through a transition period or have multiple challenges.
