Everyone should be able to access justice, not just those who can afford it. Yet it’s never been harder to find legal aid (free) representation for the young people we work with. This leads to the denial of young people’s basic rights; and a risk of being sent back to persecution and harm they fled from. Read more in our blog: https://lnkd.in/eVZwVYy8 #SocialJusticeDay

Debunking Legal Myths - I heard that a cohabitation agreement is only necessary for couples with children. That is a myth. You are not permitted to pre-determine your time-sharing and decision making with kids in an agreement. Traditionally, people do cohabitation agreements to deal with property or support. Throughout Bet Tzedek’s history, we have been lucky to team up with other mission-driven organizations to move the needle together! In 2003, for example, we worked with Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Housing Law Project to represent the tenants of a building on Kingsley Drive in Koreatown. Due to a change in lease terms which we battled, 30 eviction notices had been handed out to the vulnerable tenants we worked to protect. Protecting tenants is still an important part of everyday work! Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gKkQNAup #housingjustice #50YearsOfJusticeForAll

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and we want to highlight some ways that our projects make a difference! Tupelo Attorneys Sarah Phillips and Kristin Belvin have participated in multiple free legal clinics in the First Judicial District over the past year sponsored by the Mississippi Access to Justice. They attended the clinics held on February 13, 2023 in Lee County; April 5, 2023 in Itawamba County; September 18, 2023 in Lee County; and February 22, 2024 in Lee County. An astounding thirty percent of Maryland households are “modest means.” These Modest Means Marylanders” fall into a unique access to justice predicament: they exceed the income threshold to qualify for free civil legal aid, yet they do not make enough to be able to pay market rate for a lawyer. The result is a yawning “modest means” access to justice gap. The Affordable Law Task Force undertook the first comprehensive statewide study and analysis of the modest means justice gap in Maryland. After 18 months of study, it delivered this final report with recommendations on how to confront this crisis. https://lnkd.in/ew6hmZEc
