Unite Rather Than Divide! Lately, I've been seeing a lot of bitter posts and professional jealousy in the arts community. As a theatre artist, I know competition can push us to be better, but at the end of the day, we’re all in the same boat, striving to create magic on stage and beyond. The arts have always been about bringing people together, telling stories that resonate with our shared humanity. When we let jealousy and rivalry take over, we lose sight of what makes our work so powerful. Instead of tearing each other down, why not lift each other up? Imagine what we could achieve if we focused on supporting and celebrating each other. By sharing tips, cheering on our peers, and recognizing each other's hard work, we can build a community where everyone thrives. Unity doesn’t mean we stop competing; it means we compete with respect and empathy. It means we understand that someone else’s success doesn’t diminish our own. When one of us shines, it lights the way for all of us. So, let’s make an effort to reach out, collaborate, and support one another. Celebrate the wins, big and small, and offer a hand when things get tough. Together, we can create a more vibrant and supportive arts community. Remember, a rising tide lifts all boats. #TheatreCommunity #SupportAndCelebrate #UnityInArts #LiftEachOtherUp

Exposure to art, culture, nature and heritage broadens children's horizons and encourages them to think outside of their immediate circumstances, but the number of students given the opportunity to pursue these interests to GCSE and A-level is dropping significantly year-on-year. Since 2010, participation in arts subjects at GCSE level has dropped by 47%. There are challenges for schools facilitating meaningful access, especially through trips and visitors into school (including financial, time constraints, low staffing levels). On a personal note, I would love to see schools risk assessing for school trips / visitors into school not just by looking at the potential risks of doing *a thing*, but at the potential (though often less immediate) risks of NOT doing it.
“All too often, working-class children are not provided the same access to the arts. The arts have been treated as a luxury, rather than a necessity, for far too long.” Imelda Staunton has ‘had enough’ of unequal access to the arts, and so have we. https://lnkd.in/eXmUZGJq

The recent controversy surrounding the West End production of "Slave Play" in London has sparked important discussions about the need for spaces where marginalized communities, particularly Black individuals, can feel safe and celebrated. The decision to host Black Out Nights, specifically inviting Black audiences, has been met with both support and criticism. 🔍 It's essential to recognize that creating affinity spaces is not about exclusion but about providing a sense of belonging and safety for communities that have historically been marginalized. As playwright Jeremy O. Harris aptly explains, radical invitations are necessary to counteract the pervasive notion that certain groups do not belong in theater spaces. 🎟️ The intention behind Black Out Nights is not to enforce segregation but to actively welcome Black individuals into a space where they may not have felt comfortable or represented in the past. This initiative aims to break down barriers and foster a sense of inclusivity in an industry that has often overlooked or marginalized diverse voices. 💡 Harris's personal experience (which I completely fall into this category too) underscores the importance of initiatives like Black Out Nights. For many individuals from underrepresented backgrounds, access can be limited, and initiatives like this can serve as a gateway to experiencing and engaging with the arts. This moment is an opportunity to reflect on how we can create more inclusive and equitable spaces within the arts. By embracing diversity and actively inviting communities who've been underrepresented into the fold, we can enrich our cultural landscape and ensure that the arts truly belong to everyone. #Arts #Culture #Theater #UK #Race #AffinityGroups #DEI #RepresentationMatters #Inclusion #Equity #DiversityInArts #Intersectionality #BlackArtists #BIPOCRepresentation #SocialJustice #AccessToArts #Empowerment #RadicalInclusion #CommunityBuilding #ArtisticExpression #Empathy #SupportTheArts #CulturalEquity

Professional.....Community Advocate....City Builder, who is a Visionary and Compassionate Advisor, Coach and Mentor
It's crucial to acknowledge and address the underappreciation of artists in our society. Despite their immense contributions to our culture and entertainment, artists are often taken for granted, and their efforts, time, struggles, and skills are not given the recognition they deserve. The reluctance of people to pay for art, combined with the vulnerability of arts funding, further highlights this issue. It is essential to remember that the world would be a much duller place without the creative outputs of musicians, actors, writers, and other artists. These individuals bring color, vibrancy, and emotional depth to our lives, often filling our leisure time with joy and inspiration. To foster a society that truly values and supports artists, it is essential that we actively advocate for increased funding and appreciation for the arts. This includes recognizing the importance of artistic contributions, promoting fair compensation for artists, and encouraging widespread support for the arts through community involvement, education, and cultural policies. By doing so, we can ensure that the arts continue to thrive, enriching our lives and fostering a more vibrant and inclusive society. #underappreciated #artistsmustbesupporterbyall Sandra Yeung Racco Mario G.
