🌞 We need to more than double solar workers, yet one of the titan's of solar, SunPower Corporation, declared bankruptcy. What's that mean for the future? 🔋 SunPower, once a titan in the solar industry valued at $10 billion, has filed for bankruptcy. And after they laid off over 25% of their workforce in April, the writing was on the wall. But despite this setback, the solar industry needs to be a significant job creator. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Solar Futures Study, to achieve the Biden-Harris administration's goal of a fully decarbonized electricity system by 2035, the solar workforce needs to grow to between 500,000 and 1,500,000 workers. That's potentially a 5-fold increase in just over a decade! This massive growth potential brings both challenges and opportunities: • How do we train and prepare this workforce? • How can we ensure these are quality, well-paying jobs? • How do we build an ecosystem where a diverse workforce can flourish? • What role will unions play in this expansion? While SunPower's bankruptcy is a setback, it's not the end of solar. The fundamental drivers of clean energy adoption—environmental concerns, energy independence, and long-term cost savings—remain strong. HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK! 🙌🏼 I got to meet A LOT of human beings, IN PERSON! Cool ones too, the passionate about changing the world, type of folk. Seriously, RE+ was amazing, how fitting it was so close to Disneyland, as it did feel like the most magical place on earth. It was inspiring to see all the amazing work going on throughout the clean energy landscape. It was also encouraging to hear so many leaders share that, whilst the year has not been without challenges, businesses have been thriving in our space. I was thrilled about the feedback of the value I was bringing in assisting them, as they scale their teams to keep up with their growth demands. Finding utility-scale solar/BESS experienced technical SME's in SCADA/EMS/ADMS/DERMS systems was such a common struggle for many. So, it genuinely made me happy that the introductions I made to my network, helped make their lives easier and their business goals achievable. Plus, the cafe did a solid iced matcha. What more could you possibly ask for in life... Attending RE+ and meeting so many dynamic leaders whom I could help (if you're one of them and we didn't connect, DM me!) was my highlight. Recently, I sent out 30 emails to potential customers in the renewable energy space. The result? A 97% fail rate. But I’m good with that. Why? Because that 3% success rate could lead to great relationships. It’s easy to get discouraged by so many rejections, but those few wins make it all worth it.
