Corporate responsibility is often seen as a cost, but fulfilling this responsibility need not be a burden. In fact, one of the most impactful contributions a manufacturing company can make is sharing its accumulated knowledge and collective experience with the next generation of technical trainees. This not only strengthens the local community by expanding the pool of skilled talent, but it also positions the company for future success. By developing local talent, businesses can guide learners through a seamless transition from novice to expert, reducing the need for costly external hires. Additionally, this approach facilitates a more efficient integration of international standards into training, ensuring that industry requirements are built into the learning process from the start. It's a true win-win scenario for both the professional trainee and the business.
For many years now LB Bentley has used Gloucestershire Engineering Training (GET) for the training of our mechanical engineering apprentices and trainees, in a range of various roles, Machinists, Assembly & Test trainees, R&D trainees and Design Engineers. Over these years a strong working relationship based on good communication and mutual support has developed. Our in-house Training Mentor, Malcom Osman, and Graham Priest (Skills & Development Advisor – GET) who supports our apprentices and is a regular visitor at LB Bentley, organised a site visit for some of the GET team. We were delighted to welcome Amandip Tamber, Danielle Jenkins and Richard Watkins, to give them tour of the LB Bentley facility and a wider understanding of our business. We were able to donate some material off-cuts including Mild Steel, Brass, Stainless steel tube and PVC, useful for learning purposes, that would have otherwise have gone for recycling. #growingengineeringtalent #training #apprentices #apprenticeships #subseaengineering #mechanicalengineering

Meet the team! Name: Harrison Yorke (known as ‘Patches’) Start Date: September 2018 Career Path: Progressed from Workshop Apprentice to Workshop Technician. Approach, Attitude, and Ethos: I am a dedicated and hardworking member of a highly efficient workshop team. My strong time management skills are crucial in meeting strict deadlines to ensure that test samples are submitted to the laboratory on schedule. Proudest Moments and Achievements: I take great pride in completing my Level 2 Engineering Manufacturing Operator apprenticeship. The skills I gained during this training have directly benefited my performance in the workplace. Additionally, I successfully completed a CNC course, which involved both operation and programming. This experience enabled us to develop a new program for machining tensile samples. Challenges Faced: The uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges, particularly adapting to rapidly changing routines. I found the experience of being on furlough more difficult than working in the workshop! During that time, our team adopted an all-hands-on-deck approach to maintain our services with limited staff and resources. Lessons Learned: I have learned how to navigate high-pressure situations effectively. While we typically deliver results within a 3-5 working day standard, we also offer fast-track and platinum services, which require careful management of each job to meet customer expectations. Acknowledgments: I would like to express my gratitude to Nigel East for sharing his invaluable experience and mentorship. I also extend my thanks to Jack Hayes, Adam Gould and Clive Slocombe for their support and guidance throughout my apprenticeship and career thus far. Outside Interests: I have a passion for classic cars and own a Pontiac Trans Am. I attend the Goodwood Festival of Speed annually. In my leisure time, I enjoy meeting friends at the local pub and participating in clay pigeon shooting. Hopes for the Future of CAW: I am excited about the continued growth at Code A Weld and look forward to the future developments within the workshop, including the expansion of tools and machinery. I am eager to train the next generation of apprentices coming into the workshop. #teamplayer #welding #machning #CNC #milling #turning #workmanship #pride #education

From Apprentice to Technical Trainer: Benedikt Stiegel’s Journey at SUSS. At SUSS, careers are not just jobs, they're opportunities to grow, take on challenges, and make an impact. Benedikt Stiegel’s career path is a great example of how diverse and rewarding a journey at SUSS can be. Here’s how Benedikt describes his experiences: 1️⃣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗨𝗦𝗦? “In September 2014, I started my exciting apprenticeship as a Mechatronics Technician at our Garching site. My career at SUSS began when I was recommended for the role, attended an interview, and was hired the very next day.” 2️⃣ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗨𝗦𝗦? “After completing my apprenticeship in 2018, I took my first step in production, assembling tools and commissioning modules. It was a great hands-on start to my career.” 3️⃣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗨𝗦𝗦? "In 2019, due to high demand, I moved to our Sternenfels site to support the production of coaters. In 2020, I had the opportunity to help set up a new production site in Taiwan, where I worked for two years. This experience not only gave me a unique insight into new cultures, but also deepened my understanding of global manufacturing processes. When I returned to Germany in 2022, I became a technical trainer for our mask aligners and later expanded my responsibilities to include training on our bonder systems. The constructive feedback and support from my manager has been key to my growth throughout this journey". 4️⃣ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗨𝗦𝗦? We learn for us to Impact 🔥🔥🔥👍🏿 At GMC, providing mechanical knowledge to young interns is a key part of their development into skilled professionals. Hands-on training and mentorship offer interns valuable experience, preparing them for future roles in the industry. A common challenge is that some interns find it difficult to consistently wear their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) but this does not stop us from continuously educating them on the importance of Working Safely...👍🏿🔥 This difficulty may arise from discomfort, lack of familiarity with the equipment, or underestimating the importance of safety protocols. To address this issue, the company places strong emphasis on educating interns about the importance of PPE in preventing workplace accidents. We work to instill a culture of safety, ensuring interns understand that wearing PPE is essential for their own protection and for maintaining a safe working environment for everyone. interns; Anthony Kweku Martens @Prince Appiah Kubi and Emmanuel Ammissah #workingSafely #Interns@work #HeavyDutyEquipment #GMC
