How can we actively shape a more resilient land use in planning, architecture and construction in the direction of sustainable practices and conduct? The ground we stand on is all we have. Throughout history, it has provided us with everything, as the foundation of civilization. In our latest article, we try to lay an ear to the ground, listening to the knowledge that grows from the soil that feeds us. Cultivable soil is a scarce resource, at the intersecting point of many interests. Through interviews with 5 experts in and around the building sector this article will focus on the underrepresented voice of our land use in architecture and planning in the Nordic context. “If we do not act now, I think we will have a much harder time to transform. We need to get our politicians to understand that either we engage in incremental adaptation, or we will have to deal with a transitional chock in the future.” – Anders Larsson, researcher and teacher at the Department of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management, SLU Alnarp This article is part of the Nordic Sustainable Construction program, an initiative by the The Nordic Council of Ministers and The Nordic Council and Nordic Innovation. Our goal? To lead the Nordic region towards sustainable and competitive construction while minimizing environmental impacts. WHAT IS CITY RESILIENCE? The concept and practice of city resilience – enabling our urban social, infrastructure and natural systems to adapt and thrive despite chronic stress and acute shock – has emerged strongly in the last decade. Around the world city leaders and administrators are binding together to respond to impacts of climate extremes, economic uncertainty, ecological degradation, food insecurity and community stress. These are ‘wicked’ problems, requiring new solutions, new science, and new approaches in governments including cooperation across many different dimensions of human endeavour. Architects and our allied professions of landscape architecture, urban design, planning and engineering are collectively responsible for the capacity of our physical infrastructure not only to withstand physical shocks (flood, fire, heat) but also how our communities recover, and how our natural systems regenerate. #architect #architectural #architecturaldesign #architecture

The article is based on the results of our latest survey and takes a closer look at why so many Danish architects feel resistance from legislation.
