Since we are halfway through one of the more competitive Formula 1 seasons in recent history, having six winners in the first twelve races, now seems like an adequate time to share my thesis that I completed last spring as a requirement for my Bachelor of Arts in Economics. Titled, "F1: It is More Competitively Balanced Than You think", it explores competitive balance in Formula 1 at the driver level using deviations of the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index for driver points to determine if the driver grid is more competitive without the top three drivers every year. Through regression analysis, this research found that the dHHI of fastest laps has a positive correlation with both measures of the dHHI for driver points indicating a couple of drivers, due to talent, a faster car for that year, or a combination of both, can sway the measure of competitive balance.
