Universities need to think hard and fast about how to deploy AI tools to improve the student experience.  Nous' Darren Leafe, Daniel Benwell and Julie Mercer explore this in the recently released article, The AI revolution is transforming the student experience in higher education. They identify that by making the broader landscape of AI applications more accessible, all dimensions of the experience can be enhanced, from attraction to engagement.  Areas where there is likely to be significant short-term developments include personalised tutors, AI-generated coursework, AI grading and student feedback, and predictive analytics to identify early warning signs and interventions for students. A Longitudinal Study On Artificial Intelligence Adoption: Understanding The Drivers Of ChatGPT Usage Behavior Change In Higher Education. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have ushered in a new era in which AI-powered technologies are becoming increasingly integrated into various aspects of society. The emerging prevalence of AI-driven chatbots, such as ChatGPT (OpenAI, 2022), has particularly intrigued researchers, institutions, and society at large, due to their offering of novel opportunities in the fields of communication (Zhou et al., 2023), user satisfaction (Rapp et al., 2021), social interactions (Skjuve et al., 2022), healthcare and medicine (Pernencar et al., 2022; Dave et al., 2023) and notably, educational transformations (Wollny et al., 2021; Lo, 2023). In the realm of higher education, the potential of AI chatbots to assist students, provide information, and support learning processes has become evident (Neumann et al., 2021; Dwivedi et al., 2023). Navigating AI in Education The release of ChatGPT marked a new era, blurring the lines between human and machine capabilities—a dynamic reminiscent of the impact Google had on homework two decades ago. Yet, our teaching and evaluation methods have remained largely unchanged. In the post-COVID-19 shift to digital learning, a pressing question arises: "Who, or what is behind the answers on our tests?" Around the globe, educators are adapting. Some reduce test times to deter AI use, while others craft questions that trick algorithms, or insist on in-person exams only. Each approach has its shortcomings: from stifling thoughtful reasoning to prioritizing rote memory or valuing physical presence over interactive engagement. This challenge transcends academia, prompting us to examine the broader integration of AI in our daily lives. It urges us to consider how we can maintain the integrity of education in a digital age. It’s Day 4 in our week of Top 5s, and we’re diving into the future! From breakthroughs to barriers, the spicy to the straightforward, here’s our Top 5 predictions for AI and Education in 2024.   5. AI Detection Lawsuit   There will be a major legal case or class action lawsuit against an education institution stemming from alleged use of AI, causing a widespread re-evaluation of the risks and costs associated with using AI detection software.    4. Education-Specific GenAI Models   Arrival of new fit-for-purpose and fine-tuned versions of large and/or small language models specifically designed for an education context. Hopefully these models will be more pedagogically sound, safer, more reliable, and more robust than existing models and application layers.   3. Say Goodbye to Free GenAI EdTech Tools   Previously free GenAI EdTech tools will start charging and reducing access, reflecting the reality of heavy compute costs. This shift will disrupt workflows for early adopters and impact equity of access.    2. Adoption Disparity   More states and school systems will embrace AI, develop guidelines, and support AI literacy initiatives, while some will continue to move slowly. Uneven adoption will exacerbate the digital divide without significant mitigation strategies in place.   1.
