One of the biggest challenges I face in my business as an artisan paint maker is that it is impossible to show differences on computer screens. For one thing, color representations on screens are colored light and not material reflections. The light emitted is not a surface reflection. Color much more than hue. Then there is the fact that verbal descriptions of colors are often very creative and poetic, but when it comes to colors, the marketing texts are not very truthful. What to do? Picking colors and images for your print piece can sometimes be a challenge. Understanding color theory is key. Red commands attention and evokes emotions like urgency, passion, and anger. Yellow symbolizes happiness and deceit, often used to catch the eye. Green represents money, nature, and healing. Blue suggests responsibility, confidence, and calmness. Orange exudes warmth, fun, and affordability. White is associated with innocence and purity, while black signifies power and elegance. Brown brings warmth and richness to designs. One of my favorite questions to ask when Neuland GmbH & Co. KG comes out with a new marker is: What is this tool designed for and what else can it do? The BigOne Art is my favorite go-to markmaking tool. It’s the largest brush nib marker in the world. Did you know that Neuland markers come in 5 different brush sizes? Each designed to do different things but the same lettering styles can be scaled up and down. Well this time the newly designed product is all about ink. And Guido Neuland and his team has designed an ink (and a collection of black papers) that is formulated for mixing. I love how the Cover Ink can be mixed with other inks to make them more opaque. They sit nicely on the brown papers and blend well on black and white papers too. I recently wanted to see if these mixed inks worked in the TwinOne markers and they did not disappoint. The ombré effect with Brushlettering is the most obvious go to for what a brush nib and mixed inks can do. And the technique is as easy as 1, 2, 3… 1. Lay down the mixed ink 2. Add shading using the ink (305 Ocean in this case) full strength 3. Add highlights using Cover ink full strength I have two more lettering styles using the same steps but with different shape configurations. Stay tuned.
