This significant step marks our progress toward building a sustainable and circular textile ecosystem. Within a recently published public report (Deliverable 1.2, available on our website), we describe what circular strategies mean in the textile context. In the future textile ecosystem we envision, textiles will have longer lifespans due to improved material quality. When discarded, they will become reused products, making recycling the last resort. To achieve this, value chains must be redesigned to enable sustainable production, use, reuse, and recycling of textiles. Can we transform these mountains of discarded clothes into sustainable treasures?   Clothes made of mixed fibers, particularly those containing elastane, are nearly impossible to recycle, and often ending up on beaches, destroying our beautiful environments. Thanks to researchers at Aarhus University I know there is hope. They developed a technology that efficiently separates elastane from other fibers in mixed fabrics. Their method involves heating the textiles in a large pressure cooker-like device with specific chemicals, effectively disassembling the fabric and enabling the recycling of more textiles.   This development is still in its early stage, being tested in small batches. However the technology holds promise for industrial-scale application. This could be a game-changer in our fight against textile waste, marking a pivotal shift towards a greener future.   Lets hope that in the near future we can recycle these vast amounts of discarded clothing, preventing environmental degradation and transforming waste into valuable resources.   #dimaginar #foresight #strategicforesight #businessinnovation #recycling #sustainablefashion

Sympatex Supports Advancing Recyclability: Driving Towards a Circular Textile Industry What an engaging dialogue at #IFAT2024 in Munich today! Kim Scholze participated in the panel discussion “Fashion Too Fast – Uniting Recyclers, Producers, and Policymakers for a Circular Textile Economy” which brought together key industry leaders to address the challenges of textile recycling. The discussion highlighted the need of responsible sorters and recyclers and textiles designed with their end of life in mind. Upcoming EU legislation, such as the Ecodesign Regulation and the Waste Framework Directive, will soon require producers to make their products recyclable. Thank you, Dr. Wolfgang Trunk (Team Leader at DG ENVI, European Commission), Emily Bolon (CEO at Looper Textile Co.), and Agnes Bünemann (Managing Director at cyclos GmbH) for listening and sharing ideas, especially the importance of ambitious EU targets regarding recycling content such as fiber2fiber. And a big thanks also to BDE Bundesverband der Deutschen Entsorgungs-, Wasser- und Kreislaufwirtschaft e. V. for organizing this important panel! The discussion in the cross-industry lounge emphasized the importance of the recycling industry to the textile sector and the need for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). Sympatex advocates for a comprehensive approach to recyclability in the upcoming ESPR Delegated Act for Apparel, emphasising the need for clear standards, legislative support, and ambitious eco-design measures.
