Influence Media Partners – Backed by a $750 million investment from BlackRock and Warner Music Group. – Portfolio includes Future, Tainy, and Blake Shelton. HarbourView Equity Partners – Over $1 billion in investable capital. – Portfolio includes Nelly, Wiz Khalifa, Luis Fonsi, and Lady A. Why are these funds and other investment giants like KKR investing BILLIONS of dollars in music? 🤔 Here are FIVE possible reasons: 1. Digital music streaming is growing rapidly. More streams = More royalties. 2. Music royalties generate passive cash flows with competitive yields. 3. Unlimited opportunities to license music and generate income in gaming, film, TV, etc. 4. Overall portfolio diversification with an alternative, non/low-correlated asset class. 5. Potential capital appreciation of the underlying asset (i.e. music copyrights). There are now many options for artists to raise capital without giving away rights. The idea of a simple loan against collateral has existed in many other industries for a centuries. But music is weird and volatile, and (traditionally) banks don't know how to value an artist's worth or assess the financial risk. Most haven't even tried. But with the exploding value of music IP that's changed. Sound Royalties, HIFI, Lyric Financial, and Royalty Exchange all offer some kind of finance-backed model to take advances against future income, or borrow against current earnings. And now beatBread is extending their service to writers for their publishing shares. The investment community agrees this is a worthwhile venture - the company has raised at least $134M for their efforts.
