Encampments are a critical issue in homelessness response today. Research reveals a $100 increase in median rent results in a 9% spike in homelessness, as per the US Government Accountability Office. Do we have enough shelter space and safe options in our communities? Could NIMBY opposition hinder shelter and housing development, contributing to the rise of encampments? Have housing investments been significantly reduced by governments over the years? Are shelters in need of enhancements to be more inclusive and supportive? Does this surge reflect a fractured social contract with the most vulnerable? Encampments shed light on symptoms of broken systems, emphasizing that they are ultimately a housing problem. It's essential to remember that the majority of individuals who use drugs or have mental health challenges are housed. Sweeps of encampments without offering meaningful alternatives are traumatic, costly, and ineffective. From my 25 years of experience visiting hundreds of encampments, voluntary closures through services have shown more positive results compared to destructive approaches. Communities may implement temporary solutions like sanctioned spaces, but long-term solutions are crucial. It's vital to focus on both interim and permanent solutions simultaneously. My latest on Medium: There is plenty of evidence of programs that can work to reduce homelessness to an absolute minimum. Many localities could learn a lot from what has worked in other places. The bottom line is that affordable and available housing goes a long way to reducing homelessness.
