There’s a common myth that hospice care is fully funded by the NHS. Unfortunately that isn’t true - they mainly rely on fundraising and the generosity of the public in the local community. It currently costs around 1.6 billion a year to run UK hospices, around a third of that cost is covered by the government, but the rest is made up from donations, legacies and various fund raising activities. It’s time to increase state funding and raise awareness to ensure local hospices can continue providing essential care to our communities. The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) recently released its annual study reporting that the number of people regularly giving to charity in the UK fell to 58% in 2023, down from 65% in 2019. A decline in regular givers is a growing concern for charities, as they rely on a shrinking pool of supporters.
