Did you know methane emissions can continue even after a coal mine closes, especially without proper mitigation? This often-overlooked source poses a significant challenge in many coal producing countries. Limited data has obscured the true scale of the problem, potentially underestimating the actual emissions. In a new briefing I co-authored with my colleague Sarah Lerman-Sinkoff, we delve into the issue of abandoned mine methane (AMM) emissions in the EU. Using GEM's pioneering granular coal mine dataset, the research reveals that abandoned underground coal mines in the EU, closed since 2015, could release an estimated 298 million cubic meters of methane per year if without mitigation measures. This is equivalent to the amount potentially leaked from the Nordstream pipeline explosion in 2022! You can find the briefing here: https://lnkd.in/gUZ78PVM

While methane emissions from active coal mines grab headlines, a looming danger lies beneath the surface: abandoned mines. As a great number of coal mines reach closure, the abandoned mine methane (AMM) emissions will pose a significant, yet often overlooked, threat. Without proper mitigation and robust Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) frameworks, abandoned mines could become a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Check GEM's briefing on this topic: https://lnkd.in/gSM6GPcX

From 1 July 2025 coal mine methane emissions reform will commence, aimed at addressing the large under-reporting of methane emissions. This will significantly re-shape the Safeguard Mechanism / carbon market --> We estimate the reforms will temporarily *reduce* total reported emissions , before triggering a significant *increase* – of up to 22 million tonnes p.a. – or 16% of total FY23 reported Safeguard Mechanism emissions. Ina tight market setting, this has implications for ACCU demand, the creation of Safeguard Mecanism Credits (SMCs), and Australia’s emissions budget. Open-cut #coal mines in Australia are responsible for more than half of the total #methane emissions from Australian coalmining, but only rarely implement any actions to reduce these emissions. A new commentary from IEEFA Asia Pacific shows how the lack of incentives to pre-drain open cut mines is a high risk for Australia: 📈 Open-cut mines are growing rapidly in size, benefitting from regulatory loopholes, while underground mines are declining 🔥 Pre-draining and utilisation of coal mine methane could drive large reductions in fugitive methane emissions 💵 Current methane measurement & regulation provide no financial incentive to implement it, with fixed factors used to calculate emissions ⚡ The size of the prize is massive, for example implementing pre-draining at Hunter Valley Operations’s Continuation Project would equate to shutting down a 300MW coal-fired power station for 10 years 👉 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/g_H2i_4B Anne-Louise Knight #energy #energytransition

19 coal mines allocated to thermal power plants for sustainable fly ash disposal https://lnkd.in/gJkvyMCs #environment #power #energy #powergeneration contended to note such steps being taken by Government in the larger interest of environment! Reliance on power generation through Coal based plants cannot be completely given up till the country becomes reliant on clean energy which will take some more time!

Australia once led the world in coal methane mitigation. So why are multi-million dollar hand-outs still needed to spur on emissions reductions? The post Coal mine methane mitigation is finally getting real again – but only after huge government handouts appeared first on RenewEconomy.

Dirty. No other word for the oil and gas cherry-picking testimony on the Hill. How is one person’s testimony who represents 600 oil and gas companies about to tank the coal industry? Oil = fossil fuel Natural Gas = fossil fuel Coal = fossil fuel They are all fossil fuels. How is eliminating one but increasing the two others the answer? Answer = dirty (in every sense of the word) money U.S. states, where coal is produced, are about to have a tsunami hit them and they don’t even see it coming: Appalachian (Alabama, Eastern Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia) Interior (Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Western Kentucky), Western (Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming). Source: https://lnkd.in/gyYfxDu2 “Specifically, API is citing recent emissions reductions in the United States as justification for more production of U.S. oil and gas, and especially more exports of liquified natural gas (LNG). This argument is a perfect example of spinning two drops of truth into a downpour of misinformation. You can expect this spin to be amplified loudly by a well-funded and well-coordinated campaign to win expanded drilling on federal lands and approval of additional LNG terminals — actions that would undermine progress in tackling the climate crisis.” Source: https://lnkd.in/gxvgnRvr API’s testimony is found in the above source and here: Testimony of American Petroleum Institute (API) Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy Officer, Amanda Eversole House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Subcommittee on Environment, Manufacturing, & Critical Materials “America Leads the Way: Our History as the Global Leader Reducing Emissions” November 29, 2023 https://lnkd.in/gXAarYpB Why is coal needed: https://lnkd.in/gN6X4JzX. So what’s the dirty truth? A whole lot of people are about to be out of work because of cherry-picking words and not science. This will have serious ripple effects.

It's a consequential day today in the 🇬🇧 UK 🇬🇧, the home of the industrial revolution. Today we became the first #G7 country to switch off coal. In doing so we have ended 142 years of coal in Britain. Coal powered the #industrialrevolution - indeed my great-grandparents, and their parents before them in Wales, spent their working life underground mining it, at great risk to themselves, their colleagues, and as it turns out, the rest of us above ground. Our first coal free day in Britain was in 2017, and here we are today, 7 years later, switching it off completely. Made possible by building more offshore windfarms than anyone else except China (interestingly), by regulating emissions limits and by pricing carbon. Of course, we have also outsourced manufacturing to many other places around the globe, so this is not time to sit back, but rather to take inspiration, to focus on reducing our gas reliance, and to help to drive progress faster in other countries - for example, according to current projections we will have to wait until 2035+ for Germany to catch up, and that's not good enough! https://lnkd.in/e-m9EPxh
