We are going through some Disruptive Times and it could get Worse! We have already seen increases in costs (procurement of materials and heightened costs of energy). The increase in Employers National Insurance will also have an impact and there are likely to be additional costs in the implementation of the new Employment Rights Legislation – this has been highlighted by the Regulatory Policy Committee who, in finding the Employment Rights Bill to be ‘Not Fit for Purpose’, quoted one of the reasons as being that the UK Government has failed to carry out an adequate assessment of the disproportionate impacts on Small and Medium Sized Businesses along with associated potential mitigation. The question is: How will you mitigate these additional costs without reducing the value provided to all stakeholders? When we see such disruption, we often see a ‘knee-jerk’ reaction from employers looking to reduce staffing – but that should always be the last resort! There are four elements that can improve growth that, if you get it right, can reduce or eradicate the need to lay people off: · Organisational Structure – allowing for the flow of value throughout the organisation (working back from the Customer). · Strategy – ensuring that your HR Strategy supports both current and future needs. · Capability – enabling of both people and processes, through creative development, leading to growth (for both the employee and the organisation). · Culture – the Culture within the organisation needs to be such that it supports the improvement of capability – this is particularly important in the sharing of, and putting into context, implicit (unstructured) learning – which is at the core of creating the development and growth required to provide value (to all stakeholders).
