Teaching Tough Topics: Human Rights, Genocide, and Atrocity Crimes in the 21st Century Classroom is not a history book, it is a pedagogy book. This resource walks you through deciding what you should teach, how long you can teach the topic, and how to communicate with administrators, parents, and colleagues about what you will teach. This is just the beginning! Once you do that, there will be questions. You will plan how to handle tough questions to accompany your tough topics. Structured literacy for all!

She epitomized what it meant to be an educator who always challenged the status quo of instructional practices. She never shied away from asking the tough questions, regardless of who was in the room. I remember observing her for her final evaluation before she went on maternity leave years ago. She sang the cutest transition song, and in that moment, I fell in friend-love with this lovely Latina. Her dedication to improving student outcomes was unparalleled, but often, the chaos and directives of the system kept her from truly shining as the queen she is. Fast forward (imagine the sound effect in your head). One day, we were deep in conversation about literacy—who knows what exactly—and I mentioned the Lucy Project. I had recently learned about the incredible work they do and suggested she sign up for their program. To make a long story short, she did! Now, she’s able to do what’s best for students, using instructionally sound, evidence-based literacy practices in an environment that lets her sit in her greatness. Her post makes my heart smile. 💖 #untilallkidscanread Sandra Bermudez

Lived Places Publishing announces its first title in the Carceral Studies Collection by Andrew Taylor. The collection is led by Anna H. and Ian Cummins: https://lnkd.in/ewmbateR It’s no secret that factors such as race and socio-economic status will affect a person’s experience of life, and contact with the criminal legal system is no different. Drawing on the author’s own experience of jail and the criminal legal system, as well as academic literature in the field of carceral studies, this book explores how pre-existing inequities play out and reproduce themselves. #libraries #teachingandlearning #publishing

➡Children entering a classroom where 75% to 80% of their peers share their ethnic background may sound like a supportive environment for some. 📌What if it is not by their choice? 📌What if it is a product of a system segregating them from the rest of the students based on ethnicity? 👉This is the harsh reality faced by Romani students in Reggio Calabria, where two classes are predominantly, almost exclusively, composed of Romani children.
