The end of a diplomatic career can happen for many reasons, whether due to political shifts, personal mistakes, or changing foreign relations. In this carousel, we will explore some of the key factors that signal when a diplomat’s career might be nearing its end.

This morning we will look at a question that I, and most diplomats, get on a regular basis: What does it take to become a diplomat? When we are put on the spot like that, many of us resort to generalized aphorisms while we try to think of why we have lived in three different countries over the past ten years. Diplomacy is a very interesting and rewarding career choice, but I did notice over the course of my career that many of the people who joined the field formed their first impressions about diplomacy from media they consumed, which sometimes does not reflect the reality of the profession. So, in the spirit of paying it forward, I put together this piece to help those considering the career to make a more informed decision. The decision to become a diplomat is not a simple career decision, it is a decision that will have an impact on your lifestyle and as such I find it necessary to have as much information as possible before taking this journey.
