"Restrictions were waived during Covid-19, thereby greatly expanding access to telehealth services for Medicare beneficiaries. Congress has extended the waivers twice — most recently through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 — but they are set to expire on December 31. This would result in telehealth returning to a rural-only benefit once again for Medicare enrollees." Read more here: https://lnkd.in/g3TYeRnz

Medicare telehealth flexibilities, expanded during COVID-19, are set to expire on December 31. Before the pandemic, only rural Medicare beneficiaries could access telehealth at approved sites like hospitals. COVID-19 waivers greatly expanded access, but US Congress must act to extend these waivers beyond December. The limited legislative days in an election year have led telehealth advocates to push for swift action. If Congress delays, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) might struggle to adjust reimbursement policies in time. Proposed legislation could extend telehealth flexibilities for two more years, but nothing is yet passed. Experts argue that allowing these flexibilities to expire would hinder patient access and hurt telehealth companies reliant on Medicare billing. Despite stereotypes, many seniors find telehealth convenient and satisfactory. If the waivers lapse, patients would face reduced access to care, impacting small telehealth providers and potentially setting a negative precedent for the broader healthcare system. Since 2016, our team of professionals has assisted communities and healthcare entities by implementing telehealth services in inpatient and emergency room settings, enhancing access to care, improving patient outcomes, and streamlining healthcare delivery through innovative technology solutions and tailored support. We know that the take up of telehealth benefits was minimal prior to covid. Post-covid, providers are increasingly integrating virtual care into their practice flows. They’re becoming more comfortable with it. It’s time to make telehealth a permanent benefit for all Medicare beneficiaries. Making the current telehealth flexibilities permanent will also accelerate work to standardize how virtual care is conducted (the rules of the road) and ensure that adequate guardrails are in place for patients and providers to drive health outcomes. We all want better outcomes and telehealth is making a difference!

Are you a primary care or women's health clinician or a health policymaker? Then you'll be interesed in the linked report. The OIG conducted a survey of primary care providers, which focused on screening patients for Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). The results of the OIG's evaluation highlight challenges that hinder some primary care clinicians’ ability to perform IPV screening and make referrals as well as the incentives that may help them to overcome these challenges. Noting the critical role that clinicians play in IPV screening and making referrals, the OIG states that policymakers may consider the challenges and incentives the clinicians reported to OIG to plan steps so that primary care clinicians may more easily prioritize providing these critical services to their patients. #healthcare #Medicaid #healthpolicy #primarycare #womenshealth #domesticviolenceawareness #TitleX #primaryhealthcare

The aging of the baby #boomers means #Medicare enrollment growth is expected to exceed that of other major payers, at 7.8% annually from 2025 to 2031, the #CMS estimates. Yet many #healthsystems are unprepared to manage the wave of Medicare beneficiaries. The percentage of younger healthier employed people with more lucrative fee-for-service tax-advantaged commercial coverage continues to wane. And that remains the long-term trend. #costshifting #TripleAim #publicprivatepartnership #primarycare #hospitals #healthcarecosts
