🚨 “We need to be more innovative!” Not always. Innovation is great, but sometimes the best approach is simply catching up. When a sales team loses a deal, they often cite missing features as the reason—sometimes accurately, but usually as an oversimplification. This feedback travels up the product management chain and is eventually reduced to a sentiment like, "We need to be more innovative and have Features X, Y, and Z that customers are asking for." However, calling these missing features "innovative" is misleading. In reality, these features are often already being promoted by competitors and are included in customer RFPs. A more accurate description would be that “Features X, Y, Z are table stakes since we’re late on something the market already knows it wants.” Being innovative is essential for differentiation, but staying competitive by delivering baseline functionality is equally critical. The key is knowing when to innovate and when to match the market. It’s about balance—sometimes, playing catch-up is exactly what your customers need. This is one of the most misunderstood roles of Product Management from Sales. Often times, we are included in customer calls as part of the sales cycle, either in regular check-ins, to help rescue a renewal, or secure a win by “sthe roadmap”. This can lead to promises being made that often times end up broken, further eroding credibility and trust. The opportunity here is not to invite PM into the conversation to sell, but to begin gaining fluency with customer problems, pains, and potential gain creators. This helps validate assumptions being made with roadmap which helps steer efforts towards delivering value to customers, not just output.
