👉The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is a migratory species that faces environmental and human-induced threats all along its routes. Once an important resource also for artisanal fisheries and much appreciated in Mediterranean cuisine, the situation became critical over the last years. Something incredible -- a true story of hope -- happened this week: the Chilean government met with Kristine Tompkins, co-founder of Tompkins Conservation, and Fundación Rewilding Chile, to sign a protocol agreement to create a new national park on the southernmost time of the Earth called the Cape Froward National Park. This establishes the creation of a new protected area of over 300,000 acres, similar to the size of Grand Teton National Park in the United States. It is a rugged region and refuge for highly endangered species, a transitional ecosystem between land and sea, where diverse marine life, including Magellanic penguins, Peale’s dolphins, and Sei and humpback whales, feed off nutrients provided by the Antarctic, Pacific and Atlantic currents and coasts are lined with dense kelp forest. Subantarctic forest covers nearly half of the proposed donation area, which also features 24,710 acres of peatlands, an ecosystem considered critical to carbon storage and climate change mitigation. The best way to get some outcomes for the GBR would be to assist landowners to stop land clearing and other forms of degradation in the GBR catchments. This will deliver benefits to terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems and stabilise the soil and nutrient losses that threaten agriculture. How to do this is the subject of several reports to the QLD state government. I would just do that now.
