When folks come to me and ask why we at United Way haven’t “solved” poverty yet here is one aspect of that conversation that bears repeating and deserves exploration... Housing, policy, influx of investments, and so on. The issue is complex. Check out the series linked below for a bit more:

The problem of supply and demand 🏡 💡 Demand for affordable housing massively outstrips supply. If local councils want to manage the overwhelming shortage of housing, then having local residents that understand and feel empowered about their housing options, is a part of the solution. It plays a part in: 🏡 dignity, relationships and respect - knowledge is power 🏡 making sure that only those that should be on the list are on the list 🏡 agency - knowing your options gives you more confidence in knowing what you’re aiming for We make time for these conversations as well as bring our expertise around housing to the conversation. In this visually engaging example with Emmaus UK in Colchester, Emily Newman explored all the different places people have lived before (grey dots), where they’d like to live (red dots) and where people are going to aim for now (green dots). They compared the different pros and cons to decide which to move forward with and what they should do next. Fair Housing Friday: President's Day Weekend Edition! The Fair Housing Act was passed in 1968, but the language of the law requires continual effort to make our communities more just. A portion of the FHA requires governments and organizations to be "Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing," or in other words, to proactively take actions to overcome patterns of segregation, promote fair housing choice, eliminate disparities in opportunities, and foster inclusive communities free from discrimination.
