Five charter public schools in western Washington have achieved a remarkable milestone, with 68% of their graduates from the class of 2024 accepted into 4-year colleges. The schools, including Summit Olympus in Tacoma, Whatcom Intergenerational High School in Bellingham, Summit Atlas, Summit Sierra, and Rainier Valley Leadership Academy in Seattle, have demonstrated their commitment to academic excellence and student success. These charter schools serve a disproportionately high percentage of Black, Indigenous, students of color, and students from low-income households, providing them with an alternative learning environment that allows them to thrive. Summit Atlas, a charter school in Seattle, has maintained strong graduation and college acceptance rates, with over 95% of its students getting accepted to a four-year college. The school focuses on ensuring that its students are set up for success beyond high school, whether they choose college, other training, or a career. Despite the success of charter schools in the state, challenges remain, including less funding than traditional public schools. However, the schools are committed to ensuring that all students are set up for life-long success, and are advocating for equitable funding to support their mission. Three WCS high schools continue to be the highest-ranked, non-magnet schools in Tennessee, according to US News and World Report's annual Best High Schools list that was released on August 29. Brentwood High is ranked fifth in the state; Ravenwood High is ranked sixth; and Franklin High is ranked seventh. Nolensville High is also among the Top 10 schools in the state after being ranked tenth. Page and Independence high schools are ranked eleventh and sixteenth, respectively.  "Our students and teachers lead the state in public school education, and we are continuing to celebrate their great work," said WCS Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools Dr. Leigh Webb. "We thank all of our educators and school employees as they support the important work taking place in our classrooms. " Ten WCS high schools are ranked within the top 100 of 445 Tennessee schools. Vanguard Virtual High is unranked.  The US News and World Report reviewed approximately 25,000 high schools across the country and ranked approximately 17,680 of those. The rankings are decided using six factors that are summed together and then transformed into a percentile number between zero and 100. The six factors considered are college readiness, college curriculum breadth, state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, underserved student performance and graduation rate. Identify schools’ most successful current assets and examine how and why they are working to beat the odds for their students. 2. Convene a group of education and civic leaders to define, with input from families and teachers, what quality and best practices mean for Philadelphia schools, and create sensible metrics to measure progress toward ensuring they exist in all of our neighborhoods and catchment areas. 3. This should include leaders of school systems, as well as members of Mayor Parker’s team and City Councilmembers, who all have visions for what quality schools entail. 4. Formulate a comprehensive, long-term plan that strengthens existing quality schools and creates the conditions for more schools to reach this bar. 5. Ensure the people who serve on both the school board nominating panel and the school board are focused on and committed to pursuing this unified vision."

The news that has been buzzing all week locally and beyond through the headlines, newsfeeds and among family/friend conversations is incredibly saddening. As well as want seems could have been avoidable and rectifiable if addressed much sooner. Thankfully many great years were had at The College of Saint Rose, providing a solid quality education, life experiences and friendships gained to last a lifetime. As the shift of education, educational costs (which are no longer affordable or possible for all potential students), student enrollment, degrees vs trades and the future face of the workplace and workforce changes. Now is as good of a time as ever, if not a prime time, to reevaluate the role higher education is playing in many facets of our lives. Higher education should not just be considered a business to trustees and boards of directors. It is also peoples future, their potential, a place for community and professional building blocks. Whose walls and beyond can produce and provide some of the greatest contributions and contributors to society on all levels, no matter how micro or macro. The closing of this century’s old institution will hopefully be a lesson and an awakening to other institutions to be more thorough, thoughtful and strategic moving forward. As a Dual Enrollment practitioner for over a decade, I firmly believe that students of the Central Valley deserve an opportunity at higher education. Students need to be made aware of their choices and parents needs to be informed. College is not for everyone and that is ok.
