Today is World Mental Health Day! Nursing student Saina Yarzadeh-Dehkordi knows just how crucial it is to prioritize mental health in the workplace. 🧠❤️ “I’ve learned how important it is to take care of yourself, as a health care provider. If you don’t, it can be dangerous when you’re responsible for taking care of others,” she says. Having worked in the Burns, Trauma and High Acuity unit at Vancouver General Hospital and volunteered at a safe injection site, Saina knows first-hand the toll that managing tough health care situations can take on nurses, especially when navigated alone. Saina says she and her nursing peers find comfort in leaning on one another for support. “It’s hard to share your experiences with family because they don’t understand exactly what you’re going through,” she says. “That’s why it’s nice to have like-minded people around you who you can freely talk to about these moments and decompress with.” Read more about how a new generation of nurses like Saina is placing emphasis on well-being in the workplace: https://ow.ly/2RWl50TEkR2 Canadian Nurses Association Vancouver General Hospital World Health Organization #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek

“Be brave enough to suck at something new” has been Kristin Ignacz’s guiding motto ever since she decided to return to school after years in the trenches as a legal writer. This transition wasn’t just a career shift – it was a commitment to making a global impact through communication. “I knew I needed a change, and the Professional Communications Post-Degree Diploma (PDD) program at Douglas College felt like the perfect opportunity to expand my skills,” Kristin shares. The program did more than just enhance her skills; it gave her the confidence to excel, with her work being featured in two open educational resource textbooks. “Receiving accolades from my professor and seeing my work published made me realize this was a career I could truly excel in.” Today, Kristin is the Community Engagement Manager at Right to Learn Afghanistan, using her communication expertise to advocate for Afghan women’s right to education. “Afghanistan is the only country in the world that officially bans women and girls from receiving an education,” she explains. “As a woman who could attend university and send my daughter to school, I knew I had to be part of this movement.” Discover more about Kristin’s journey: https://ow.ly/wpXp50TGnji

What does it mean to decolonize academic research? For two Douglas instructors, a decade of collaborative archaeology in Líl̓wat territory is just the beginning. An excavation project co-led by Anthropology instructor Bill Angelbeck and Geography lab technician Sasha Djakovic in collaboration with the Líl̓wat Nation analyzes artifacts through the lens of traditional Líl̓wat oral histories and knowledge. “Traditional Indigenous knowledge, like Western science, is observational and evidence based,” says Angelbeck. “Oral traditions are equally important in holding history.” By combining oral histories with archaeological investigation, the project has uncovered and determined the age of many Líl̓wat cultural sites. The excavation of eight pithouse village sites and radiocarbon dating of an ancient hunting camp have provided evidence that the ancestral territory has been home to the Líl̓wat for at least 5,500 years. ➡️ Read more about the Líl̓wat archaeological project: https://ow.ly/RaFF50Txkwx (Photo courtesy of Sasha Djakovic)
