Once in a blue moon, I'll meet someone who trivializes sports as a career choice. Sometimes they minimize the value of sports to society entirely. "You're just moving a ball around a field," they'll say. I thought about this on my trip home from the Pac-12 Conference women's basketball championship, where USC upset Stanford in a *nationally-televised* matinee on ESPN. My simple response to those people on the career front is that sports hold value as entertainment, no different than cinema or books. But the latter part of that attitude...of sports having low value to society? There are infinite answers and anecdotes to dispel that (and the sheer volume and variety are really evidence enough...). But for recency, I want to highlight someone from the game I was at: USC hooper McKenzie Forbes, who hung 26/5 on the No. 2 team in the country (Stanford) and was named tournament Most Outstanding Player after the win. Kenzie first entered my radar because she's from Folsom. She impressively started her NCAA career at Cal, transfered to Harvard, and now is a grad student at USC (🎓 All top schools for academics). Along the way she did whatever necessary to achieve her goals and do what was in her control to make them happen, regardless of the things outside of her control. #Resilience After she moved to the LA area, I learned from an interview that she was very active in the Boston community and was hopeful to continue that with a homeless outreach organization in SoCal. So, I recommended to her The Giving Spirit, an org I've helped out in the past, and then put her on the founder's radar along with a program idea to maximize her potential community impact given her background. #Community Kenzie personifies the irrefutable power and value of sports - which is why I started my company Athlete Strategies, to amplify sports' reach and impact. So to answer those who don't see the value... Lessons in Leadership from Nick Saban 🏆 First off, this picture is old. Like 2019 old, back when I spoke to the Alabama Crimson Tide. 🗓️ But these lessons from the legend are timeless, in my opinion. Over my 12 year career in sports, I had the pleasure of observing and indirectly assisting Saban on about ten different occasions. Here’s what I learned 👇 🏈 Protect The Head Coach I had no less than five prep meetings and touch points with support staffers to ensure I was aware of the standards and expectations of the program before taking the stage. They knew more about me than I knew about myself. By the time you get to Saban, you’ve been fully vetted, so he’s extremely welcoming to you knowing his team has done their jobs. 🏈 Time is of The Essence When they told me I had 30 minutes, they meant I had those 1800 seconds exactly, and not a millisecond more. By the time I’d reached 29 minutes and 50 seconds, they had already begun switching over to the next meeting’s slides as I was closing out my talk. At 30 minutes on the dot, I was signaled to exit the room as the position meetings were beginning. True story. 🏈 How You Do Anything… …is how you do everything. Between my time at the Peach Bowl and later the CFP National Championship, I saw ‘Bama at least once a year for nearly a decade. One thing I always noticed is that everyone on staff was constantly moving. Like I never once saw anyone standing around and wondering what they were supposed to be doing. I’m talking down to the interns & graduate assistants. Also, you couldn’t distinguish who the starters were from the rest of the team, unless you knew their names and faces. Every single player got off the bus looking like they were ready for absolute war, from the first to the last. Heck, I remember they were once WINNING 24-0 at halftime in a kickoff game, and the whole team was yelling this as they went into the tunnel: “Aight fellas, it’s 0-0. Back to work!” 🤯 Saban didn’t even have to say a word. 📹 WHAT WE’RE WATCHING: “Rich Paul: The 60 MINUTES Interview.” In sports circles, Rich is known as the long-time agent of National Basketball Association (NBA) superstar LeBron James and the founder of KLUTCH SPORTS GROUP, LLC, which also represents: Draymond Green (NBA), A’ja Wilson (WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association)), and Jalen Hurts (National Football League (NFL)). Though his world of sports arenas may seem far removed from corporate America, Rich exemplifies many leadership lessons on how to live a life of PURPOSE and IMPACT, says PrismWork’s Lisen Stromberg (She/Her). A key anecdote that stood out: ”Not only was I underestimated, I was also not wanted,” Rich recounts, of when he first started Klutch in 2012. “I didn’t look like the success in our industry, especially from a place of decision-making. And I wanted to disrupt the industry. It was an honor to take my son to support his grandpa at the Lott Trophy Awards Dinner. It was awesome to meet all the finalist and learn more about their greatness both on and off the gridiron. What makes the award so special is the focus on celebrating the success of the best college defensive players have achieved on the field as well as off. The four core values of the award are Stewardship, character, integrity, and excellence. These values are not just key to being successful in sports but are indispensable for a thriving business.
