The Prior Authorization Battlefield Evolving from the Medieval Era to Full-Blown High-Tech Warfare ⚔️🤖 Some physicians are now leveraging generative AI tools to expedite prior authorization letters, slashing the time spent on this laborious task and improving approval rates. But what happens next? It’s likely that insurers will also harness AI to enhance their denial processes, bringing us into an era where “AI fights AI”. My prediction? Not much will improve—we're just escalating the same conflict but on steroids. And guess who’s going to get hurt the most? Yes, you got it right: patients! 🏥💔 For those who aren’t familiar, “prior authorization” is often the bane of a physician’s existence. 📄😩 Over the years, the list of treatments requiring pre-approval has expanded, and the number of denials has risen. Physicians are burdened by exhaustive documentation demands and spend hours on these tasks, often to the detriment of patient care. 🙄 They hate the prior-auth process, seeing it as a barrier to providing timely and necessary care. Payers (insurance companies) argue that these checks are crucial for cost control. If a procedure or treatment can be provided in a more cost-effective way, shouldn't it be? While both sides tout enhancing patient care as the ultimate goal and advocate for a collaborative environment between providers and insurers, things are hardly getting better. Why? Because the incentives just don’t align... and this is all over healthcare. 🚨In the past month California Governor Newsom has signed 17 bills covering GenAI. This is the most comprehensive legislative package in the nation for the industry. Newsom, however, vetoed broader sweeping AI legislation. At least 45 states have considered AI legislation in 2024. Newsom signed a pair of health care artificial intelligence laws that require payers using AI tools in coverage decisions to comply with new guardrails and regulate generative AI communications between providers and patients. The bill SB 1120 requires health insurers in California to have physicians or other qualified health-care providers review coverage decisions made by artificial intelligence tools under legislation signed into law Saturday. The bill also requires health insurers that use AI software in the utilization review process to develop written policies to ensure that coverage decisions are based on the medical necessity of treatments and are equitably applied to patients. The bill AB 3030 would require a health facility, clinic, physician’s office, or group practice that uses GenAI to produce certain written or verbal patient communications pertaining to patient clinical information to include a disclaimer that informs the patient that GenAI was used to generate the communication, along with instructions on how the patient may contact a human health care provider or employee of the practice. #GenAI #transparency #payers #providers #healthcareonlinkedin

“Dr. Tariq said Doximity GPT, a HIPAA-compliant version of the chatbot, had halved the time he spent on prior authorizations. Maybe more important, he said, the tool — which draws from his patient’s medical records and the insurer’s coverage requirements — has made his letters more successful. Since using A.I. to draft prior-authorization requests, he said about 90 percent of his requests for coverage had been approved by insurers, compared with about 10 percent before. Generative A.I. has been particularly useful for doctors at small practices, who might not ordinarily have time to appeal an insurer’s decision — even if they think their patient’s treatment will suffer because of it… Dr. Michael Albert, an obesity medicine specialist in Oklahoma, said A.I. had enabled his small, resource-strapped telehealth practice to go from almost never appealing insurance denials to sending 10 to 20 appeals per week. Although #AI can make doctors' lives easier by automating administrative tasks, assisting with diagnostics, streamlining workflows, and personalizing care, the information and communication to #patients needs to be unquestionable. #AI models must be continuously updated with real-world data, adhere to evidence-based practices, and leave final decision-making in the hands of the clinician. By combining AI’s computational power with human oversight, only then can #AI enhance the efficiency and quality of #patientcare without compromising accuracy.

I don't see this trend slowing down anytime soon. AI is a tool, and I think it's a net positive if it means patients will get a timely response. As long as qualified personnel read and approve the AI-drafted message for accuracy and tone, I think it's a net positive. We'd run into problems if AI (and AI-induced errors) are drafted and sent without human involvement. What do you think? #AI #Healthcare
