As I navigated the job market last year, a non-negotiable I kept in mind was one word: impact. I am pleased to share the launch of the Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Care Network - the extension of our clinical excellence across the Pacific Northwest, including rural communities. Here's why it matters: - 15% of the US population resides in rural areas (CDC). - The National Rural Health Association found that access to specialists in rural communities is about 30 per 100,000 (compared to 263 specialists in urban areas). - Rural areas have lower per capita income as well as higher rates of chronic disease (CDC). - From 2010 to 2021, 136 rural hospitals closed (American Hospital Association). Rural areas aren't going away.

Many articles like this latest from HIMSS talk about the technology that can help transition more care to the home including hospital care. That discussion usually centers on RPM solutions and that is important, but there is a much larger need. When a patient is admitted for hospital-level care from home, in-person care is coordinated, orders are fulfilled, records are kept and that requires integrated technology as well. It's one of the reasons that more than 20 organizations across the US partner with Medically Home as an operating partner for their hospital-at-home programs. https://lnkd.in/eZ7wDC9W

Proper attachment of patients to a primary care provider (PCP) is a first step in understanding the primary care landscape in BC. Without an accurate attachment number, it is unclear which PCPs are accepting patients, and which patient is without a PCP. This mismatch leads to patients without a PCP even if there is enough supply to meet the demand. This results in issues such as long wait times at walk in clinics, which is only a symptom of inaccessible primary care! This is why organizations such as the DoBC and NNPBC providing support to help PCPs with accurate patient attachment is such an important first step in addressing the surfacing primary care crisis!
