With Independence Day being celebrated tomorrow in the US, it was a fitting time to revisit the words of the Declaration of Independence. As famously stated in the Declaration: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; that, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their safety and happiness." In the words of Thomas Jefferson: "Let the annual return of this day forever refresh our recollections of these rights, and an undiminished devotion to them." #politics #unitedstates What is citizenship in United States of America? America is not a get rich quick club by getting a credential from the top 10 universities to lay claim to the society. It is self-governance. It is holding our elected representatives accountable for their limited responsibilities to ensure pure public good. In doing so, we learn to exercise our constitutional rights responsibly and become responsible for ourselves for our private good. We serve ourselves, each other, help those who cannot help themselves, and serve the republic.
