While Wanjiku (Mwananchi) is a pivotal stakeholder in Kenya's healthcare sector, she has been short-changed in the power (or Money) struggle between Ministry of Health, Kenya, and Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists' Union (KMPDU). The ongoing doctor's strike is the tip of the iceberg bedeviling the healthcare sector in Kenya. Assuming doctors get what they want as stipulated in the CBA, does it guarantee Wanjiku will receive better and more timely services? Not a chance.
We are all too familiar with the harsh realities of our public hospitals-negligence, medication shortages, lack of treatment records, vested interests, corruption, poor governance, and the mistreatment of patients by various staff members. It's high time we address all these issues collectively. We cannot hope to solve one problem and ignore the other 30; the patient's life is at stake, and our efforts will be in vain.
Therefore, alongside the doctor's demands, we need a parallel voice that will call for accountability, infrastructure, and humane treatment of patients (with dignity and respect) by both the medical and non-medical staff at the hospitals.
Wanjiku is sick and tired of being left to witness the dust, chest-thumping, the stalemate, and all the other shenanigans going on that she has no idea of. Her neutrality in this matter has seen her get kicked down into despair, with no options but to pray for good health that will not necessitate hospital seeking.
The success of healthcare delivery in Kenya will only be achieved when the people mandated to take action at all levels resolve to amplify their love for the country and do the right thing, overcoming the focus on self-interest and getting rich at the expense of poor Kenyans.
