From coast to coast, our interns captured what it's like to build great things together at DPR. Congratulations to vida shirvani for earning the runner-up spot in our 2024 Intern Photo Contest with this stunning shot of our self-perform concrete team pouring pads for the mechanical systems at the new DPR Silicon Valley Office in Santa Clara, CA.

In his time as an intern this summer, Parker has "learned a lot about the construction processes, job tracking and team leadership while out here this summer; however I have learned even more about myself and what possibilities lay in store" along with a greater understanding of the heavy civil sector of the industry. #RLWrocks#SummerIntern#ConstructionIntern#HeavyCivilConstruction
🌴 This week we took a field trip!!! 🌴
It reminded me of my elementary school days, riding a giant charter bus to the natural history museum. Oh, you may be wondering where we went. We visited our company's storage unit and explored all the old historic tapes. We’ve been working on a major project to sort, return, and dispose of old recording tapes to free up space in both in-house and off-site storage.
One key lesson I learned was the importance of maintaining business integrity. Despite having tapes that had been unclaimed for over 20 years, we focused on upholding our reputation and avoided the easy way out. We value the trust artist put in our studio to properly handle their tapes, so throwing away tapes was not an option. Instead, I meticulously sorted and processed the tapes, consulting with managers who were in contact with clients to determine which tapes to return and which to discard. I established efficient methods for disassembling and destroying the tapes. This not only sped up the process but also ensured clarity and accuracy in our records.
Handling sensitive items, like packaging precious tapes, became a skill I took seriously. As my boss put it, “package this up like you’re sending baby Jesus to heaven.” I learned the importance of selecting the right box size, using bubble wrap and packing paper efficiently, and even strapping boxes to ensure they arrived safely.
As an intern, the opportunity to handle such critical items was unexpected but rewarding. It reinforced the idea that trust and hard work can lead to significant responsibilities. In addition to sorting tapes, I organized unedited tapes for reuse and observed one of my supervisors replace the power system of a bulk eraser. This experience provided valuable insights into technical maintenance and safety checks when repairing high voltage equipment. By spending extra time setting up this bulk eraser, we saved hours that would have otherwise been spent running tapes individually through a tape deck on eraser mode.
This experience has been invaluable, teaching me the impact of meticulous work and the pride in preserving the integrity of our business.

🌟 Intern Spotlight: Meet Phoebe Ellis! 🌟
We just caught up with Phoebe, one of our talented summer interns working out of our corporate office. Here’s what she shared:
🔹 About Phoebe:
"I'm interning with the R&D department at the corporate office. I recently completed my second year at Georgia Tech, majoring in Civil Engineering. I’m also from Atlanta, Georgia."
🔹 Internship Experience at Schnabel:
"My internship at Schnabel has been great! Everyone is kind and willing to share their knowledge. I’ve enjoyed visiting job sites, applying classroom knowledge, and working with fellow interns. I’ve been involved in micropile load tests at M&T Bank Stadium, job support for SOMOS and Eccles, and R&D projects like analyzing waterfront tiebacks, concrete maturity, and deflection of a hanging mast. This experience has been eye-opening and shaped my future career goals."
🔹 Most Important Lesson Learned:
"The most important lesson I’ve learned so far is that it’s okay to ask questions or ask for help. I’m halfway through college, so I still have a lot to learn. Everyone at Schnabel is a great resource, and I need to take advantage of all the knowledge they have."
🔹 Free Time Fun:
"I really enjoy being outside in the sun, whether hiking, running, or sitting in a park reading a book. I also love traveling, exploring new cities, and thrifting and sewing clothes."

Below is a video of the Perimeter Truss Reflector (PTR) I designed and built during my Summer internship at Tendeg LLC. In the video, Seth Hill, Kenzo Neff, and myself deploy and stow the PTR. If you would like to see more details on the project, please see my previous post!
I work with my dad on construction and I set up cabinets, adding shelf pins, white caps, bumper pads, and setting up crowns and calking them. I wish to own my own installation company and have employees work under me.

The link above is the site that I posted at the beginning of my internship to show everyone the ins and outs of what I do. 2 of the points that I chose from this site are about "Measuring for accuracy" and "Planning, scheduling and communication” back then.
The site emphasizes the importance of measuring for accuracy and planning, scheduling, and communication in the construction process. Accuracy is crucial as it ensures that cabinets and shelves fit within their designated spaces. Planning, scheduling, and communication are also crucial as mistakes can lead to wasted time and effort. For instance, if cabinets and shelves are incorrectly chosen, the process can be time-consuming and wasteful, resulting in wasted time and effort. Therefore, it is essential to prioritize these aspects in the construction process. #alpineinternships#mountainlandcteAlpine School District

Concrete Industry Management Major at Texas State University
I made a video tour of the HolcimUS Ste. Genevieve cement plant. During the second week of my internship, we spent the entire week touring the facility. You might have seen my post about it at the time. Ste. Genevieve is built on such a grand scale that it’s truly a spectacle to witness. I was naturally drawn to capturing the dramatic sights. By the end of the week, I had collected something like 700 pictures and videos. As someone who enjoys my little creative projects now and then, it seemed only natural to put it all together into a video. I’ve been given permission to share my work with all of you. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it.

creating my own space became a lifeline
Moving to a different city has been less exciting and more uncertain. In the adjusting phase, the only thing I could count on was my room.
I think of it as my storybook that tells who I am.
I believe in creating a space that sets my mood with favorite posters, green vines, and fairy lights (yes, I carried that to bglr for my internship)
But it's not just about aesthetics, it's about creating a space that speaks to your soul. Your room becomes a reflection of your personality, values, and dreams, serving as a constant reminder of who you are and where you're headed.
So, as you unpack your stuff for a new life, remember the importance of decorating your space. It's more than just arranging furniture and hanging up pictures, it's about creating a space that feels like home, no matter where you are in the world.
PS: I lived in a triple-sharing room and the smile I saw on their faces was such a beautiful sight!

Believe it or not, but about 95% of this video can be classified as work-related!
My 3-month internship at CuttingRoom ended last Friday, and I’m beyond grateful to have worked in this start-up environment. I grew professionally, and there were so many opportunities to just have fun while doing the work.
Being partnered with Jenny, a Norwegian intern, is one of the main reasons this experience was as valuable as it was. Not only did I make a friend, but we’ve both learned much about good and clear communication to be on the same page. Together, we worked on an issue that CuttingRoom was facing: the lack of easily accessible information on the strengths of using CuttingRoom and how to use it. We believed this was an obstacle in the company’s aim to move away from sales-driven growth and toward product-led growth.
Although we struggled a bit to find our feet at first, we ended up creating nearly 40 explainer videos. These videos will be used to improve the user experience, and to show decision-makers the strengths of CuttingRoom. Jenny and I had complete responsibility for this project, so we were involved in the littlest details of planning and creating the videos, but always had to keep the big picture in mind — how would all these videos fit together and how would it contribute to CuttingRoom?
My time at CuttingRoom has been super enriching. It’s shown me that I can do anything when I take the time to learn. Something I’ve really appreciated about Norwegian business culture is the high trust and lack of informal hierarchy — what I did mattered and what I said mattered. A massive thanks to Helge for being our mentor, and teaching us a lot about video editing. I had a great time working with you and the rest of the guys (Vidar, Glenn, and Tor Erik).
We made this fun video about our experience as interns at CuttingRoom. We hope you enjoy it, especially the song we created through an AI prompt 😂
(Side note: there was a pool competition between Jenny and I. She has admitted defeat… but in reality, if we hadn’t made the rule to discount any games where someone (aka me) lost by pocketing the white ball after the black ball, she would’ve been way ahead of me 😂)
