I came across a great article on how to improve safety culture. Personally, I have never appreciated the "safety first" slogan or culture. When we quantify safety, it implies that it is a task that can be completed and then moved on from. However, if we keep safety as a core value or key principle, it becomes a part of the process and how we carry out tasks. How Behaviors Impact Safety: Our behaviors are the root cause of most incidents. Safe behaviors lead to safe outcomes, while unsafe behaviors lead to incidents. Behaviors can be changed and improved. How do you promote a JUST SAFETY CULTURE in your organisation? ⛑️🦺 Well, first of all, you need to involve your employees and ask them about the current culture state. They are the ones who decide whether your safety culture is indeed ‘just’. But what is a just safety culture, really? 🤷 The term refers to an organisational approach to safety which promotes open reporting, transparent actions, and accountable consequences. A just culture emphasises the importance of learning from honest mistakes without fear of punitive actions or reprimands. Essentially, a just culture fosters a safety mindset where employees are not afraid of reporting near misses, incidents, risks, or hazards because they feel secure doing so. But how do you as an organisation ensure a just culture and safety mindset? ✈️ Create open channels of communication and feedback where employees can report safety concerns, write suggestions, and receive feedback on their reporting. ✈️ Empower employees through safety training to make sure that they possess the knowledge and skills required to identify and report safety issues. ✈️ Establish safety committees, action groups, and representatives across the organisation and departments to anchor the culture and ensure effective communication. ✈️ Provide regular reviews and updates on the safety efforts and reporting – and make sure to involve the employees in the process.
