May is #preeclampsia awareness month. There is so much to discuss when it comes to preeclampsia and maternal health and outcomes. This week, National Perinatal Information Center is going to connect you to some of the data that continues to inform organizations across the country about readiness, recognition, and response to preeclampsia. First up: NPIC continues to track many metrics and outcomes surrounding maternal health. One of these is the NPIC Rate of Deliveries with Hypertension Coding. As you can see, from 2019 - 2023, there has been a 26% increase in deliveries coded with #hypertension within the NPIC perinatal database. Good questions here National Perinatal Information Center! There’s many, many reasons for increasing #hypertension. Hypertension is linked to stress for one. Other bio markers impact health— nutrition and general health and physical activity. Not to mention racism in healthcare practices! In general we are managing increasingly challenging scenarios with work/balance and rising costs of living. People are increasingly divorced from healthy living practices and this results in a variety of health impacts. New study on #maternaldeath recording gaps 👇 📢 A recent systematic review and meta-analysis sheds light on the significant issue of incompleteness and misclassification of maternal deaths. 🔍 Key Findings: • Maternal death recording is incomplete by 34%. • Misclassification leads to a 39% underestimation of maternal mortality. • Deaths among minority groups and those not classified by medical examiners are more often misclassified. Recommendations: • Establish robust Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (#CRVS) systems. • Enhance measures such as confidential enquiries into maternal deaths. The study underscores the urgent need for enhanced systems and methodologies to ensure accurate recording and classification of maternal deaths, a critical step towards better maternal health outcomes globally. If we want to prevent avoidable maternal deaths, countries need accurate data on deaths caused by pregnancy and related causes. But this new systematic review and meta-analysis from World Health Organization colleagues reinforces what we know about many maternal deaths not being counted. When the true number of women dying and the causes are underreported, prevention efforts aren’t targeted, policymakers may ignore the magnitude of the problem, and more women die. Maternal deaths are still being underestimated by nearly 40% due to a combination of incompleteness of reporting and misclassification of cause of death and "maternal mortality is substantially under-estimated in almost all contexts." Our recent study published in the Journal of Women's Reproductive Health sheds light on cesarean delivery outcomes in Ethiopia, focusing on the role of Integrated Emergency Surgical Officers (IESOs). 🔍 Key Points: The study evaluates the Rate, Maternal, and Fetal Outcome of Cesarean deliveries performed by IESOs at Shenen Gibe General Hospital, Jimma South West Ethiopia. IESOs are trained to handle emergency obstetrical-gynecological and general surgical procedures, contributing to the reduction of maternal and perinatal mortality rates. Out of 2115 deliveries, 186 were cesarean sections, with a cesarean delivery rate of 8.8%. The leading indication for cesarean delivery was fetal distress (24.2%). Neonatal mortality rate following cesarean delivery was 16.8%, with the primary cause being birth asphyxia. Financial, staffing, and policy challenges have forced hospitals in both rural and urban areas to shutter their labor and delivery units, causing patients to travel longer distances or go without needed care. And, believe it or not, the US has the worst maternal mortality rates in the developed world. A retrospective cohort study looks at perinatal outcomes at hospitals that participated in the Rural Surgical and Obstetrical Networks (RSON) initiative. The study took place over a five year period, comparing outcomes with those at referral hospitals and examining temporal changes in the proportion of childbearing people who resided in RSON communities and gave birth locally. ⁠ ⁠ Results from the study found that childbearing people who gave birth at RSON supported hospitals had a 10% lower incidence of adverse maternal newborn outcomes compared to those who gave birth at referral hospitals, after controlling for referral bias. ⁠ ⁠ Findings from the study provide evidence that smaller rural hospitals in British Columbia can safely support local births, and that investments in rural hospitals contribute to service stability that benefits the whole region. ⁠ ⁠ 🔗 Access the full article for free until March 22, 2024: https://lnkd.in/gkKhWNiu ⁠ #rccbc #ruralhealthcare #maternitycare #perinatalcare #healthresearch #obstetrics
