Today, our US offices are closed in observance of Juneteenth, a federal holiday we are proud to celebrate.
Juneteenth reminds us of the ongoing journey toward equality and justice. It’s a day to celebrate progress, acknowledge challenges, and emphasize inclusivity.
Here are a few things to know about Juneteenth:
☑ Juneteenth, which combines the words June and nineteenth, commemorates the events of June 19, 1865. Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, and announced that enslaved people in the state were finally free by executive decree. Texas was the last state to comply with Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
☑ Texans celebrated Juneteenth in 1866 with community-centric events, such as parades, cookouts, prayer gatherings, historical and cultural readings, and musical performances. Over time, communities have developed their own traditions. As families emigrated from Texas to other parts of the United States, they carried Juneteenth celebrations with them
☑ The holiday does not mark one day but honors an ongoing racial equality process. It’s a day to recognize, honor, and embrace Black Americans' contributions to the United States.
This Juneteenth, take the opportunity to amplify Black voices, shop from Black-owned businesses, and support community-led organizations.
