Why is the Govt of India wasting 3,000 crores on a statue , rather than using it for hospitals, schools, etc ?
This was a very common question, a few years back.
I recently had the chance to visit the Statue of Unity, and it left me in awe of its grandeur. Standing tall in Ekta Nagar, this monument not only honors the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel but has also transformed the surrounding area in remarkable ways. However, its construction wasn't without criticism. Many questioned whether the funds used for the statue could have been better allocated to build schools, hospitals, or other social infrastructure.
While these concerns are valid, it's also important to understand that an economy needs revenue-generating options to sustain development in the long run. The Statue of Unity has boosted tourism immensely, bringing jobs, infrastructure improvements, and better transportation links to this region, which was previously underdeveloped. The influx of tourists has spurred local businesses, hotels, and services, indirectly contributing to the area's overall prosperity.
The revenue generated through tourism can, over time, be channeled into building essential services like schools and hospitals. We need a balanced approach: immediate investments in education and healthcare are crucial, but long-term economic plans, like tourism projects, are equally important for sustainable development.
Criticism has its place, but so does progress. After seeing the positive changes firsthand, I believe projects like these are stepping stones toward broader growth for the country.
