If your DEI work and definition of underrepresented nurses doesn’t include disabled people you are not being inclusive. There is minimal research about disabled nurses and nursing students (something I am working on with colleagues) and we are not even considered for most DEI initiatives. Professional nursing organizations, how are you including disabled nurses and the disabled community in your health equity work? If you are not, how will you correct that? What are you doing to address health inequities for people with disabilities? How are you advocating for disabled students to become nurses? What steps are you taking to address ableism that disabled nurses experience? I would really like to hear from professional nursing organizations because what I see is a lot of exclusion. Our contributions to nursing are often overlooked. #DEI #Disability #DisabledNurse

Yes! This is why I pushed for it! This also is in line with curriculum development as well.

4moDr. Anna Maria Valdez my sister is blind. My view of ableism and discrimination is solidly through her experience. While she is not a nurse, many of these apply: 1) Care providers assume she doesn’t want children because she is blind 🤬🤬 2) Speak more loudly around her because they think she can’t hear 3) Her providers don’t ask her opinion about her care preferences because they assume she is helpless or doesn’t have an opinion (that one gets me every time when I’m with her at a visit). And yes, we still need braille. And those printers are not expensive and should be available everywhere. See? You got me started‼️
