Rotator Cuff Tear Facts ⬇️ Rotator cuff tears are more common as we age However, just because you have one does NOT mean that you will have pain or a significant loss of strength of function 50% of people with a rotator cuff tear are asymptomatic (without symptoms) But, the 50% of people with a rotator cuff tear are symptomatic (with symptoms), so there does seem to be an association there Regardless, we know that most people with rotator cuff tears DO NOT REQUIRE surgery Physical therapy alone vs. surgery + exercise/physical therapy shows no clinically significant difference over the course of a year However, for SOME people in SOME situations, surgery + rehab is the best option 🔑 So the key takeaways are this: - Don’t rush to get surgery if you have a painful shoulder with a rotator cuff tear - Make sure you get quality rehab guidance from a professional for at least 3-6 months before considering surgery (in most cases) - If your pain/function is not improving at a rate that makes sense to both you and your PT (over a 3-6 month period), consider a surgical consult with an Orthopedic surgeon ----- 🎯 If you need help coming up with a plan for your shoulder or any other painful issue/injury, I can help in 2 ways: 1️⃣ Work with me 𝟭-𝗼𝗻-𝟭 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲: I’ll perform a detailed assessment, put together an individualized program based on where you’re currently at and where you want to get to (your goals), and then coach you through the process of getting there ➡️ Tap below to fill out my application form (I’ll respond within 48 hours): https://lnkd.in/gZ5Uey7B 2️⃣ Join over 2000 others in my app: if you don’t need 1-on-1 coaching but need structure, my app includes 𝟭𝟬 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀 (including my 8-week 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗𝗘𝗥 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗠) and 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟲𝟬 guided mobility, strength and stability routines within 𝟮𝟱 categorized sections covering the whole body ➡️ Tap below to get full access to my app 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 for your first 𝟳 𝗗𝗔𝗬𝗦 and then 𝟰𝟰% 𝗢𝗙𝗙: https://lnkd.in/g8DHxEVC ----- 📚 References: PMID: 36100305 PMID: 27385156 ----- 📕 Definitions: - Rotator Cuff Tendons: the parts that connect the rotator cuff muscles to the upper arm bone/humerus - Partial Thickness Tear: a tear in the tendon that only goes part of the way through the tendon - Full Thickness Tear: a tear in the tendon goes all the way through the tendon *Partial of Full thickness tears are usually described in terms of how deep the tear is in the tendon and doesn't refer to length, width or other dimensions

As much as we'd like this to be the case, surgery alone will more often than not solve the problem. We have developed some great relationships with local orthopedic surgeons over the years with the understanding that we need to work together to get the best outcomes for our patients. Unfortunately, it is the case that sometimes conservative management of musculoskeletal (MSK) issues doesn't work, and surgery is required. Hopefully, if you're reading this, you haven't needed to go down this route. Once the decision is made that surgery is needed, this is not your cue to sit back and wait for the surgeon to 'fix you'. This is your cue to ask your surgeon who they recommend to work with on building up the strength around your affected area prior to your surgery date. If you do the former, your body will decondition, which has a number of effects - 1. Your muscles reduce in size - The word atrophy describes what happens at a physiological level, but essentially this means that your muscles reduce in size and therefore strength. This can happen as soon as 24 hrs after an injury so it is starting sooner than you think. 2. You wont deal with the effects of an anaesthetic as well as you might otherwise - An efficient cardiovascular system will help you deal with the surgical stress response following an anaesthetic, so if you've not done any exercise for a significant period prior to your surgery, the more stress this will place on your body. 3. Your rehab following surgery will take longer - Think of this as a hill you need to climb, by doing no exercise prior to your surgery, you are essentially rolling down the hill right to the bottom. Engaging with prehab and exercise prior to your surgery allows you to start further up the hill, making the climb a little shorter and less impactful. Now if you're waiting for surgery, the liklyhood is that you're probably in pain and the prospect of exercise or strength training is pretty daunting. This is where we come in! Our understanding of injury, how the body operates and our knowledge of specific rehabilitation techniques means that we're able to select tailored approaches in order to achieve these objectives prior to your surgery. Dont wait for your surgery, get started beforehand and increase your chances of a better outcome! #physio #localphysio #physioclinic #privatephysio #injury #backpain #northampton #northamptonphysio #kneeinjury #shoulderinjury #ankleinjury #hippain #neckpain #injuryrehab #sportsinjury #injuryexercises #rehabexercises #healthiswealth
