At the start of my HR career, I was giving team members twice my age feedback: "You don’t have to like everyone you work with. But… You do need to treat everyone professionally and respectfully.” They were grown adults. But their behavior towards one another was childish. If you’re in HR and see employees treating others disrespectfully or unprofessionally? Speak up and challenge those behaviors. Employees don’t have to like everyone they work with. But they do need to treat everyone with professionalism and respect. Expect this of yourself. Expect this of others. --------------------------------------------------------- ♻ Repost if you found this helpful and follow me, Amy Mencarelli, to grow your HR career.

"You don’t have to like everyone you work with. But… you do need to treat everyone professionally and respectfully.” This is such a common phrase which I used a lot more often as things became more charged in the workplace over the past few years when personal opinions clashed between co-workers or employer policies. If you are a supervisor, lead, manager, or anyone who is on the receiving end of employee complaints- keep this handy and practice saying it out loud. Listen to the employee first, see if there is a valid workplace impact (work isn't getting done, possible harassment/discriminatory comments, etc), and then say this phrase if it comes down to a difference of opinion. Just like I tell my kids as they go to school- you may not like everyone in class or the person you sit next to. That's okay. You don't have to like all 25 kids in your class. In fact, it's pretty likely you won't like everyone in your class. But does that mean you can say mean things to them? Absolutely not. Does that mean you can ignore them if your teacher assigns the two of you to a project? Absolutely not.

As an HR professional, your role is to be the voice of your employees. To truly understand their needs, you need to have empathy. Empathy is not about feeling sorry for someone. It's about understanding their perspective and acknowledging their feelings. When you show empathy, you build trust with your employees. They feel heard, valued, and respected. "Experienced HR Executive | Expertise in Talent Acquisition, Employer Branding & Data-Driven Hiring | Passionate About Fostering Positive Work Environments & Driving Organizational Success"
In my daily interactions as an HR professional, I often find amusement in the reactions of my colleagues and superiors to the way I engage with applicants. While their surprise is understandable, it underscores a fundamental belief I hold dear: the power and importance of human connections cannot be overstated. Being in HR shouldn't elevate us to the status of demigods. Instead, it presents a unique opportunity to explore, understand, and assist people. It's a role that demands empathy, respect, and a genuine interest in others. After all, every HR professional was once an applicant, navigating the same uncertainties and hopes. The essence of HR lies in recognizing the humanity in each interaction. By doing so, we can create a more supportive and inclusive workplace, ultimately benefiting both the organization and the individuals within it. Good morning people.
