If you want to stop the spread of cultures, you stop people from speaking their languages. In Australia, only 12 of 440 Indigenous languages have been continuously passed down since colonisation. Imagine the knowledge lost and the disconnections created. Today, First Nations communities are reclaiming their languages—preserving cultural heritage, identity and autonomy. Sharing stories in one’s mother tongue and other languages not only strengthens community bonds but also reflects Australia’s rich diversity. How are you encouraging multilingual storytelling into your programs for children? For more insights, listen to the full episode here:

Is anyone researching Celtic languages or Celtic peoples and has an opinion on this challenge to our understanding of languages in Britain, Ireland and Brittany?
Are Celtic languages actually Celtic? In episode 1 of the BBC documentary 'Inis na nIontas' we learn that human remains from 2000 B.C. were found in Ireland and they matched the DNA of the current Irish population. The Celts arrived in Ireland almost 1000-1500 years later. Did the Irish population, and therefore also much of the British Isles, ditch their mother tongues and take on the Celtic language(s), completely forgetting their own? It doesn't seem very likely given what we know about cultural pride, the role of language in conveying culture, etc. It brings to mind the maxim of M.J.Harper in 'The History of Britain Revealed': "What is is what was, unless there is conclusive evidence to the contrary". [Incidentally a fascinating read for convincing challenging of other language classifications, including Latin languages!] Maybe Irish Gaelic has always been spoken in Ireland. This could be linguists' "The world is not flat!" moment. Perhaps now its time to bring disciplines together and for linguists, historians, DNA and carbon-dating technology to come together and re-explore language classifications. #languagefamilies #celticlangauges #linguisticarcheology

Languages are indeed a treasure of the cultural wealth of humanity, reflecting the incredible diversity and depth of our societies. Each language is a unique universe, carrying stories, traditions, ways of thinking and perceptions of the world. They are the guardians of the literature, poetry, songs and legends that form the fabric of every culture. By exploring different languages, we discover concepts unique to certain cultures, untranslatable to others. These specific words and phrases offer fascinating insight into how different communities perceive and interact with the world. For example, the Japanese word "Komorebi" describes sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees, a specific concept that evokes a particular image and feeling. However, many languages are today threatened with extinction, taking with them entire sections of cultural heritage. Preserving languages is therefore essential not only to maintain cultural diversity, but also to preserve the unique knowledge and perspectives they represent. 🌏🗣️ Do you think that language preservation is essential to maintaining cultural diversity? How can we help protect and promote languages and cultures in an increasingly globalized world? #LANGUAGES #Culture #LinguisticDiversity #CulturalHeritage #Preservation #brain #AcademiaNeuEra 📚💬🌍🎨
