These are the profound and personal words of Aisha Thomas She talks about her experiences, her perceptions and her identity as a ‘Black-British’ woman. She talks of what it means to live ‘within the hyphen’, to be pushed and pulled by the tensions between the two that are imposed upon her. She allows us in to hear and through her delivery, in some small way, feel what this is like for her. This is a privilege for anyone who listens and really hears her. This experience of living within the hyphen is not one that people categorised as ‘White-British’ will experience. For us, ‘White’ and ‘British’ are the same. They carry no differential value judgements, nor do they create any internal sense of contestation for us about who we are. Aisha, allows us some insight into this experience. This is an insight that we owe a historical debt to listen to and really, truly hear. Whoever you are, however you identify, whatever your ‘category’, listen to Aisha’s words. You will learn. You still pay taxes on your income, home, land and personal property, to the king of the land (government). And the king of the land (government) has the right to take anything they think they need. This is a feudalistic oligarchy, where your slavery has been hidden behind corporations and governments. What used to be called slaves are now called employees… and you can never be free… the king (government) owns you! once a people give their consent to be governed, their life, liberty and happiness are doomed.
