Though not a SOF-specific problem, Sandor Fabian (Ph. D.)'s article is a reminder that we need to reevaluate our National military relationship with technology. High tech solutions can provide great protection to the joint force and to our p[artners, but can also provide a false security (illusion) if we fail to first understand the role that "super-empowered populations" now play in war. Yes, technology is important, but Low tech and no tech solutions that are highly survivable and easily transferable to populations in crisis are invaluable. https://lnkd.in/eJUUitzc

Understanding Modern Warfare: Russia's Hybrid War Against the West In today’s rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape, warfare is no longer confined to the battlefield. Russia’s hybrid warfare strategy exemplifies this shift, blending military and non-military tactics to achieve strategic objectives while operating below the threshold of conventional war. From cyber-attacks and disinformation campaigns to leveraging non-state actors, Russia’s approach is designed to destabilize adversaries while maintaining plausible deniability. This synchronized fusion of tools—military, political, economic, and informational—creates a powerful, unconventional strategy. Key insights: - Hybrid Warfare: A mix of kinetic and non-military strategies, including cyber warfare, espionage, and propaganda. - Plausible Deniability: The use of non-attributable forces like the “little green men” in Crimea. - Strategic Adaptation: Russian doctrines emphasize asymmetric actions and soft power to offset Western superiority. As noted in NATO’s analysis, understanding and countering hybrid threats is critical in safeguarding security and stability. NATO's characterization as the "sword arm of the West" highlights its critical role in ensuring collective defense, projecting military power, and shaping global security dynamics. While this role reinforces Western interests and promotes stability in certain regions, it also raises concerns about escalating tensions with adversaries, perceptions of threat among non-member states, and internal cohesion challenges within the alliance. As geopolitical landscapes evolve, NATO must adapt its strategies to address emerging threats while maintaining its foundational principles of collective security and democratic values.

Today the Open Source Centre, alongside our colleagues at the Royal United Services Institute, unveiled its first official report! We wrote on how the West could disrupt the Russian artillery supply chain, what key factors to target, and who the main raw material providers are. As explained in detail in the paper, Russian industrial might is not so mighty if looked at from the right angle. Have a good read!
🚨We are thrilled to announce our new strategic partnership with the newly formed Open Source Centre (OSC) to deliver novel, open-source based research on the war in Ukraine and other conflicts. Our latest joint report provides a comprehensive analysis of Russia’s artillery supply chain to identify vulnerabilities and inform future policy decisions by Ukraine’s Western partners on supply chain disruption. The report also provides an indication of the expansion of Russia’s defence industry that is currently underway. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3zJnowN

This is and incredible article portraying the future of hybrid warfare and it's implications for international security, this should be a central point of discussion during the Washington Summit of the NATO Alliance. The threats emanating from this type of tactics aren't just reserved to armed conflicts, they also affect the well functioning of societies during peace periods. As civil society we need to be aware of this threats and how they affect us.

The reorganization of China's military focuses on improving information systems, cyber, and C2 structures, influenced by U.S. advancements and Russia's failures in Ukraine. The success of these reforms could bolster Chinese military confidence, posing challenges for U.S. deterrence strategies, necessitating new investments and doctrinal adaptations to maintain strategic advantages. #indopacific #china #southchinasea #taiwan #ukraine #russia #deterrence #security #cyber #informationsecurity
In April, China’s military underwent its largest reorganization this decade when the Strategic Support Force was eliminated, and a new Information Support Force inaugurated.

"Last of all things is to scale the wall of a Citadel/Capitol with your troops" - Sun Tzu. This was clearly one of China's greatest military tacticians giving advice on warfare. Today, America's Citadels are in cyberspace. From #SIGNINTL to social media platforms. It's imperative that America contain #TikTok in order to accomplish larger goals in dominating cyberspace or any other areas of space. Using Freedom of Speech to protect foreign adversaries domestic interests here on American soil is being applied by loyal Beijing followers. Defensive arguments on National Security is of course, applicable. Yet, one simple fact should standout, if a company is controlled by a foreign power, adversary or not, American Constitutional law doesn't apply, leaving companies like Tik Tok open to espionage tribunals. Any domestic company that can elude extinction by the Department of Defense overnight, is an internal threat to America.
The purpose of the PLA Space Force has been revealed. New development: The PLA’s Strategic Support Force is now split into three independent units for space, information, and cyber. Note what their spokesperson said about the role of their military space “sub-branch” in developing space including for resources and governance. Clearly, we should anticipate the involvement of the PLA Space Force in advancing the CCP’s goals for finding and using space resources and for shaping the international order in space according to their own interests. “Senior Colonel Wu Qian, a spokesman for the Defence Ministry, told media later that with the latest overhaul, the PLA now has four services, namely the Ground Force, the Navy, the Air Force and the Rocket Force, and several sub-branches including the Space Force, the Cyberspace Force, the Information Support Force and the Joint Logistic Support Force.” In response to a question about the newly declassified Space Force, Wu said that building the force is of great significance in strengthening the capability to safely travel to outer space, openly and peacefully develop space resources, and enhance governance and crisis management in space.”

Tyler Bates is wise to point out the latest from the PLA Space Force and its revealed structure. In the future, global superpowers are either #space powers, or they aren't superpowers. Full Stop. Our adversaries understand this, but do we? Space access, mobility, infrastructure, and, ultimately, resource utilization will determine who the winners and losers are of the #5ir, which is the #spaceeconomy, a $10T 2050s opportunity. -GSP- MilkyWayEconomy @the space economy

In a world where cutting-edge technology reshapes warfare, how do we ensure that our invisible strengths are both seen and respected? As warfare increasingly relies on networking and algorithms, the challenge for NATO and its allies isn't just harnessing these technologies but also effectively signaling their capabilities. Military deterrence today requires that adversaries recognize and respect these advanced capabilities, which depends significantly on our ability to communicate them. However, signaling the strength of algorithms is complex. Unlike tanks or aircraft, which are tangible and visible, algorithms operate unseen, making their capabilities difficult to demonstrate convincingly. This invisibility raises questions about the authenticity of such signals—are they genuine indicators of capability or merely unsubstantiated claims? This balance between secrecy and transparency is crucial. If adversaries are unaware of the real capabilities due to their hidden nature, these systems lose their deterrent value. Yet, disclosing too much could compromise security. The evolving landscape of digital warfare necessitates new strategies that balance transparency and secrecy to maintain strategic advantages and effectively deter threats, a vital concern for NATO's operational strategy. #NATO #Deterrence #ArtificialIntelligence
