Had an incredible conversation with Paramjeet Singh Bisht, India’s walk race athlete who just returned from the Paris Olympics 2024. What stuck with me? The glaring gaps in our sports infrastructure at the grassroots level. Yes, Khelo India is a fantastic initiative—it’s moving the needle in the right direction, but it’s not nearly enough. The real challenge? We’re still not doing enough where it matters most—at the foundation.India is teeming with raw talent. But here’s the problem: these athletes aren’t getting the support, infrastructure, or resources they need to succeed. Paramjeet’s journey to the Olympics wasn’t smooth. It was a battle against poor facilities, lack of proper training support, and a system that just doesn’t invest enough at the grassroots. If someone like him made it to the world stage, imagine how many others are left behind simply because they didn’t have the right opportunities.We need to think bigger. Currently, over 3,000 athletes are being trained under the initiative, receiving annual scholarships of ₹6 lakh each. 125 athletes from the Asian Games contingent were products of the Khelo India program, with 40 medalists among them. Their success is a testament to the program’s effectiveness in identifying and nurturing talent. The program’s inclusivity is another highlight. It focuses on empowering women, differently-abled individuals, and athletes from rural and tribal communities. With a government investment exceeding ₹2,500 crores, the initiative shows PM Modi’s commitment to fostering a sporting culture in India. I am what I am. I am what I think. I am the change. As an Indian, I dream of seeing India leading the world not just in population and democracy but in sports too. Despite being the largest democracy and having the largest population, our medal tally in events like the Olympics doesn’t reflect our potential. To change this narrative, I have dedicated resources to build world-class sports facilities. Our infrastructure includes indoor badminton courts, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a table tennis hall, and a 10-meter shooting range. These facilities have already seen champions like Archana Kamath, who has made it to the Indian table tennis team for the 2024 Paris Olympics. As a first-generation entrepreneur, I believe in giving back to the nation that shaped me. My goal is to nurture future champions and entrepreneurs, contributing to India’s success on the global stage. We need world-class sports facilities every 20-30 kilometers, and we can’t achieve this without the support of private and public sector companies. Our government has done a lot through the Khelo India initiative, and I am proud of what we have accomplished in the last Olympics. But we aren’t there yet. I request all corporates to come forward, adopt a sport, and support it in all possible ways. Together, we can bring India into the top 3 in the world.
