Has any one else with a research background experienced the problem that they are perceived as not able to perform administrative work? This week I had 9 rejections for administrative posts at the University of Sheffield. 3 for posts in research administrative support. Feedback for two posts commented that my background was in research, not in research administration. My research background meant I had no experience of admin. They pretty much implied that I was not capable of administration tasks. This was despite mentioning tasks like correspondence, ordering of equipment and processing invoices that are part of running research in my applications. There seems to be a blind spot where people can't see past the research, or don't know that running a research project also involves admin tasks. I wondered if anyone else with a research or academic background had experienced this problem? Or is it just at the University of Sheffield? Does anyone with a research background feel that there ability to perform admin skills is overlooked, maybe by those who don't know what research involves? Are researchers perceived as somehow unorganised? I just wondered. #UoS #UniversityofSheffield

So colleagues, I wanted to present this to show what happens when you have computers doing the job of a human. Within a matter of a day, I received this response from a potential position from Capella University! Now let me point out what is wrong here. Here, I am being told that they are not moving forward with me because of my “credentials.” So let me explain why this is a problem. 1. I graduated from their school in which my transcripts are present, which clearly shows that I have the necessary credentials. 2. I have already talked to the HR Department about this. 3. Paperwork has been resubmitted showing that I have the credentials. I can understand you not giving me the position because I am not qualified. But I am blatantly being told that I am not being considered because I don’t have the “credentials.” So let me share what they are missing: 1. A PhD receipent that has over 14 years of experience in the field of social work including micro and macro practice. 2. Published writer/author 3. Policy worker- as I chair not 1 but two boards 4. Lecturer in over 7 graduate level social work courses (I know it is not a lot but I am fresh). 5. Over 7 years of research experience 6. Dissertarion coach to over 10 doctoral students, all of whom have completed their dissertations. I don’t write this post to garner sympathy or sorrows— my time will come. I write this as an educational piece for HR personnel to understand that allowing computers to do the job dismissed qualified and talented candidates that could be an asset to your firm. Dwell on that for a minute!

You don't have to pay 3000$ to get each article published. Article processing charges (APCs) is a nightmare for many researchers, especially those with limited resources. At first, it seems very awkward (like to Jamie's mother) that while you are a talented scientific researcher and writer, you are not paid by the journal for your work. In addition, you might even need to pay large sum of APCs to the journal to publish your work. So what are this money for? This is to cover the editorial system of the journal (website hosting, emailing system, IT, etc....), the salaries of employees who handle and edit your article, and other expenses. These costs can be covered by 2 ways: 1. The reader of the published article. In this way, the journal takes no money from the author but takes money from the readers either through selling one article after another or through annual subscriptions. In this situation, the article will have less views as the access is limited to the subscribers 2. The author himself (like Jamie). As the author pays the APCs, the article is freely available to all readers. Hence called, open access. Sometimes, the APCs are covered by the institution of the author, the reader or the journal and so, no one is paying and the article is accessible. So, if you wrote an article and you don't have money to pay APCs (like most of us) and your institution is not going to pay, you only have one option. To publish in a journal with subscription (not open access). How do approach seniors for requesting participation in a research project? Firstly, please read the basic methodology & types of research. Most academics are very proud of their work & achievements. You can show interest in advancing their work or get yourself involved in an ongoing project. As an example, compare the two statements when you approach a senior academic. Statement # 1: Dear Sir/Madam. I am aiming to apply for jobs in the UK/US. I hear that research looks very good on CV. I have no idea how to research & can you get my name on a few publications? (Beleive it or not, but people say this) Statement # 2: Dear Sir/Madam I saw the impressive project you published with the population-based study. As it was a few years ago, I found some more research on this topic. Would you kindly consider mentoring me if I attempt a literate review on this topic? Lastly. There are many shady people out there selling names in publications & asking for money to involve you in projects. Don't involve yourself in such activities. This can cost you your license.
