How I turned a mock interview into my dream job at L'Oréal. An unexpected story that has remained pivotal in who I am today. It was 2007. The year before my graduation year from McGill University. I had studied marketing and had my heart set on joining L'Oréal. I signed up for a mock interview prep session with my career center and picked L'Oréal as the company I'd "pretend" to interview for. Well, turned out to be not so pretend after all. Shortly into the interview, I realized it was in fact 2 hiring managers from the company! 1 month following the mock interview, I got a call from one of the hiring managers who wanted me to do a summer internship there. I was ecstatic! But there was a problem. I had already booked a summer trip to Europe and couldn't proceed with the internship. And they only offered them in the summer so I had to decline. My heart was crushed and I felt I completely blew it. Fast forward to that fall, I attended the career fair at my university. I went straight to the L'Oréal booth to give in my resume hoping for a second chance. To my surprise, the woman I spoke to at that exact moment, at that exact time was the hiring manager who had called me about the internship. I couldn't believe it! The stars were aligning. She was really happy to see me back and said she'd put my resume at the top of their list. WOW! Within a week, I had my first interview scheduled. Within 2 weeks, I interviewed with the Marketing Manager of the team I would eventually join. Within 3 weeks, I interviewed with the VP of HR. It was really intimidating and I was so nervous about how I did. Within 4 weeks, I received my dream job offer to start upon graduation! 💫 Moral of my story: Do not discount the importance of relationships, networking and putting yourself out there. Rolling onto the next stop of the Skew roadshow in Brum for Spring Fair & Autumn Fair next week. Why bother attending if we’re not signing any deals? Here’s why... Skew’s mission is to deliver effective creative. That means we can’t just hand over work and wave goodbye without constantly learning from every project. By the time we're ready to deliver our creative work, our team has the most expertise in that brand at that moment in the world. It’s crazy to let that knowledge just walk away. So, our most effective work comes when we’re sticking around to see the implementation, iterate, and build on what we’ve done to help the deals get made. For us, Spring Fair is an opportunity to talk to the people on the front line. Designers and product developers that have put our work to use in their ranges. If we're only creating pretty pictures without ensuring their effectiveness, we're missing our mark. They may please people in the moment (that is important too), but who knows if they provide a return? We go there for feedback on what works, what doesn’t, and what the reaction is from the market. We put what we learn into the next project and the next. It’s great to catch up with old friends too. Working in such a fast paced environment sometimes means working on hundred things in parallel. Things you sometimes like, you sometimes don‘t. Last week was a week I personally enjoyed a lot and learnt a lot both. Why? We were invited to join the career fair of Erasmus University Rotterdam & the The New Fashion Society as well as hosting a workshop on „what does it mean being a sustainable organisation?“. And that’s exactly what I appreciate most working in HR: engaging with so many diverse people and curious minds, hearing their perspectives and collaboratively dreaming in problems rather than in immediate solutions. Next to this stopover in Rotterdam, I was able to meet our store & showroom employees based in #Amsterdam first time in person. Such a difference to connect face to face, provide an open and safe space for feedback and hearing their ideas and concerns. Exactly these kind of days let me know: even if you love to jump out of your own bubble, even if you love to work in an interdisciplinary context, even if you have so many interests: you are in the right place as people are the key driver of every successful transformation, no matter which industry, size of company or context you are working for. Yes of course, there are always things you like and don‘t like in your job but in the end for me it‘s appreciating the bigger picture, the smile in people‘s faces and the diverse input you receive everyday. #peoplebusiness #futureHR

This week for our 🌟 Alumni Spotlight 🌟 we’re excited to highlight a 2018 graduate of our #supplychain and #operationsmanagement program, Claire Edwards! Claire is also a member of our Young Alumni Advisory Board. Claire’s supply chain experience started with an internship at J.M. Smucker Company in Orrville, OH, which she got connected with through the Miami Career Fair. This internship ultimately turned into a full-time position in #supplyplanning. She was a production and inventory analyst at J.M. Smucker for 3.5 years, managing coffee production for brands such as Folgers, Dunkin’, and Café Bustelo. She then decided to come back to her hometown of Columbus, OH, and join the T. Marzetti Company team. As end-to-end supply planner, she manages the 12-month production plan for 2 Marzetti Frozen Pasta plants, ensuring they are scheduling the plants in the most #efficient and #costeffective way possible, while keeping the brand priorities at the forefront. She also balances the #inventory for 100+ SKUs across 4 #distributioncenters to meet customer needs at the right time in the right quantity. She adds, “I’ve been there for 2+ years now and love the opportunities I’ve had, including starting the Young Professionals Employee Resource Group to help create resources for those with a growth mindset.” Claire is exceptionally passionate about integrating wellness with career through “life scheduling.” Her inspiration came from the following ideas: 1️⃣ We are more than our #career, and she had interests in things like #journaling, morning #routines, #blogging, and more 2️⃣ Supply chain principles like #capacityplanning, grouping items together for efficiency, and #prioritizing important items could be applied to life In 2023, she became a Morning Routine & Time Management Coach, helping 9-5ers integrate #healthyhabits & #sideprojects into their life so they can be more than their career. Her career advice to current students is the following: “Talk to as many people as possible, understand what their day-to-day looks like, and ask yourself if you could see yourself doing that. Can you imagine doing a job where you have to work with brands that you don't believe in? I can't. And I never have. I remember when I was at University, doing the rounds at the careers fairs feeling so uninspired by everything that I saw. Until I met the team on the Procter & Gamble stand. First and foremost the people were genuinely nice people - eager to talk and to find out more about me. Secondly, the brands stood out to me - their portfolio was brimming with brands I'd grown up with, watched on TV, read about in magazines and I got genuinely excited about when they launched new products and I spotted them in stores. But they also had a clear purpose, values that spoke to me and integrity in everything they did. I was sold!! I just needed to pass the lengthy interview assessment (which luckily I did 😉 ) I spent nearly 10 years at P&G and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I made life long friends, got to work on some incredible brands, doing things I could only have dreamt of when I was younger and got to work with amazing partners. More than anything, it taught me the importance of purpose and the importance of working on brands and with people who align to your values. Which is why at The Good Influence we are so selective about the brands and organisations we work with. As a team we are passionate about every single one of our clients and their products and their purpose... and I feel so grateful for this. I can't imagine spending my days trying to get excited about a brand I don't believe in. Moral of the story (if you're still here!) - stick to your values, your passion will shine through, and you'll deliver far better work than if you're working on something that doesn't align with what you believe in. At 21 years old, I knew exactly what I wanted to do when I grew up. I got the job I dreamed about. And I... didn't like it. I always thought about my career as a linear path. You graduate. You get a job. You like it. You become better at it. You get promoted. And one day, finally, you retire. There was no space for alternative paths, for some experiments, for a different approach. I always imagined my career as an IKEA bookshelf. The instructions are clear, you just need to follow them and you will eventually get the results. But while I was moving forward in my career, I realized it was more like a box of LEGO. You can do whatever you want with the bricks. You can start with an idea, experiment a bit, and end up with something totally different. While the IKEA bookshelf-career has a linear path. If you miss a screw, you're screwed. With the LEGO-career you can change your mind or start from scratch as many times as you want. As a 21-year-old graduate, I would have loved to hear this. To have a different perspective. Everyone should think about their career as a never-ending experiment. Sometimes you get it right, some other times you learn something about yourself. And at any time, you can change your mind. --- On Friday I had the honor of leading a workshop with Tanja Lanza during the Career Fair at John Cabot University.
