The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Summit, scheduled for February 10 and 11, 2025, at the Grand Palais in Paris, is poised to be a significant international event. It will convene Heads of State and Government, leaders of international organizations, CEOs from both small and large companies, representatives from academia, non-governmental organizations, artists, and members of civil society. The diverse and high-profile nature of the participants suggests a large-scale gathering. The summit aims to be as inclusive as possible, with broad representation across countries and sectors. The event will guide discussions on how AI can drive beneficial social, economic, and environmental outcomes in the public interest. Notably, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed his attendance, highlighting the summit’s global significance. Given the prominence of the venue, the Grand Palais, and the high-profile attendees, the summit is expected to be a major event in the field of artificial intelligence.

The UK’s Laboratory for AI Security Research is gradually taking shape, with delivery partners of the £8 million public-private partnership meeting for the first time. The partnership seeks to unite industry, academia and HMG experts in the pursuit of supporting the development of safe AI systems. The partnership includes Government departments, as well as experts and research teams from Plexal, University of Oxford, The Alan Turing Institute and Queen’s University Belfast.

Last weekend, I had the honor of joining a panel of subject matter experts from industry and government at the Future of Humanity Summit in Washington, D.C. (August 9-12, 2024). The Future of Humanity Summit was a weekend-long exploration of the dynamic intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and humanity. The event featured world-renowned speakers and experts from industry, government, and academia, offering engaging conversations on topics like AI in space, defense, national security, cyber, healthcare, finance, education, and government. My panel (see below) focused on the intersection of AI, government, and industry. We discussed the global AI arms race and AI's impact on society, including existential threats. We also touched on the roles and responsibilities governments and industries must assume and share to ensure the safe, ethical, and fair use of AI. Kudos to the event organizer, Bryan Talebi, and the Sempre Events team for organizing such a high-caliber and brain-teasing event!
