100% on this one👇🏼 In 2014 we did a study comparing investments in the #energy and#water sectors! We used #patents in each sector as a proxy for innovation. Turning technological advances in clean energy into sustainable businesses is expensive and risky. Very few startups from the first climate-tech boom, which happened from around 2006 until 2013, exist today. But we can learn from past failures. As VC spending in climate technology increases again, here are six key takeaways from that first investment boom.

Rotman makes some good points about past cleantech failures, but is he too pessimistic? This time could be different - more VC money, more urgency around climate, advanced computation to derisk technologies. Yet demand issues remain and politics are fickle. What policy signals could drive consumer pull for green products? I'm heartened by possibilities like green hydrogen and carbontech, but wary of hype. Achieving scale will require technologists and policymakers working together. We need visionary entrepreneurs, responsive government support, AND sustainable economics underpinning climate tech. Can these align before it's too late? Let's have an honest debate on the path forward.
