Is mimicking the cells that carry haemoglobin the key to a blood substitute? ErythroMer, a candidate blood substitute, is made from “recycled” human haemoglobin—the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body—wrapped in a membrane to mimic a tiny cell. In the tests on rabbits, the transfusion appeared to be working. The animal’s heart rate and blood pressure looked just fine. Donated blood has a shelf life of just 42 days which is not enough, even in developed countries with well-organized blood donation systems. ErythroMer, on the other hand, will be universal and have a shelf life of 2 years. Blood in blood banks spoil after 40 days. Millions of people donate blood every day, but about 1.3 million pints of donated blood spoil every year. You have been taught that there are just 4 types of blood group A, B, AB and O. But ABO isn’t the only blood grouping system. There are currently 33 systems recognized by the International Society of Blood Transfusion There are blood groups called "Lutheran," "Duffy," "Hh/Bombay," "Ok," etc. From the attached image, oxygenated blood is the one with bright red, while dexoygenated blood is dark reddish. For instance, When spilled blood get to the ground or a surface it starts to turn darker and darker as it dries and its hemoglobin breaks down into a compound called methemoglobin. #AoKfacts #Oplum #facts #fact

Recognising the urgent need for safe blood transfusions, especially for patients with thalassemia who require blood every 15 days, it is crucial that we ensure that donated blood is free from TTIs. We're committed to raising awareness about the importance of safe blood, particularly with NAT testing.  As part of this initiative, we collaborated with NSS IIT Delhi during their blood donation camp, and engaged with active donors to reinforce the significance of blood safety and NAT testing. Few eligibility criteria for blood donation: 🩸Age of the donor should be between 18 years to 65 years. If the individual is a first time donor, then the upper limit is 60 years. 🩸Minimum Weight of the individual should be 45 kgs. 🩸Systolic Blood pressure should be between 100-140 mm/hg and diastolic BP should be between 60-90 mm/hg. 🩸 Normal body temperature 🩸 Hemoglobin should be >12.5gm/dl 🩸If the individual is diabetic and it's under control ,is on oral diabetic drugs without any dose modification within a month can donate. 🩸Above are few basic points taken into consideration before blood donation.
